I have been to the city and it’s no doubt a very desirable place to live. I am not moving there but will be flying out for an interview soon inshallah, so just want to get some idea.
What are some good areas of San Diego from Muslim community and school district point of view? Also the value of properties in those areas? What is the general cost of living?
There is a Muslim community center in San Diego. Everyone was very kind and welcoming at the Muslim Community Center of Greater San Diego.
There are many good areas which are safe and good but parts closer to downtown SD tend to be less safe. Check out La Jolla, University City, Del Mar, or Clairemont. Mira Mesa, Poway, and Scripps Ranch arent too bad either.
SD is really nice, i dont know specifics on schools and property prices, but most of my desi friends tend to live in northern san diego - carlsbad, del mar, rancho bernardo, mera mesa. traffic is a 100 times better than in LA, but the climate is the same, if not nicer. love the beaches - much cleaner and even warmer waters compared to LA. la jolla is amazing. there used to be a guppy named bebo from SD, you could try PMing her.
Carlsbad is beautiful, I agree. Few years ago, Callaway Golf called me in for few days for the interview and arranged for a realtor to give me a tour and showed me the properties. I fell in love with the area abd fell out of love after looking at the property prices. :p But that is when I was living in Michigan where double the house was half the price in comparison. Now after living in west coast for few years, I think I can swallow and digest the high cost of living of southern California.
There's no place like Sd! La Jolla, Del Mar, Carlsbad and rancho Santa Fe are all nice areas but getting any property there is too $$$$ considering their proximity to the ocean. If you're moving with your family and are looking into nice neighborhoods / good schools etc then I would suggest looking into Rancho Bernardo, scripps ranch, and East Lake (the upscale side of Chula Vista). Stay away from areas like university heights and the downtown. Majority of the Upper/ middle-class desis now live in the camino del sur/ camino del norte area where the newly established Muslim community center is located and the school district there is one of the best in the state. Housing in those areas is a little on the pricey side as well but Id recommend it the most for raising a family.
Bluebells, I had a great time in San Diego. Did my Friday prayers in Somalian majority mosque somewhere not very far from the downtown, and loved my two blocks walk under beautiful sunny sky. This was my third trip to SD, all because of different reasons, and always paid by another company. Never had to spend my money there. What is there not to love about this city :D
