I dont think that my title needs any further clarification. Pretty much other than the prophet himself, we failed to produce a single figure who is well respected or well renowned across the globe and throughout the history. Why is that we dont have a single Nelson Mandela, or Mother Theresa, or Gandhi, or Martin Luther King in our history? What happened? Where did we go wrong?
We did, scholars, leaders, philanthropists, artists..
Many were in a different era, where there was more focus on learning and enterprise
Many who do the work now are not well known in major international media, or even in their local media.
Even today you have people like edhi and Muhammad Yunus. But they are not as celebrated as chichoray sheikhs, two bit thug politico mullahs and ethnic political overlords etc.
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
Yes Edhi's example also was in my mind. Second was actually Mohammad Ali (boxer). Edhi is more of a local player. I am not sure that he will be seen in par with Mother Theresa or Mandela.
I guess what I am saying is to have a person who served society without the boundaries of religion, more in the civil rights arena. Our heroes for most of the part, are just 'our' heroes. No one else gives a damn to them.
But that's is PR, media and publicity.
Our media moved from being Saddarnama to ootpatang wahiaat bakwaas.
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
quran mei hai islam mei dhakil ho tu puray k puray dhakil ho na ka jo pasand ai who le lo aur baki chor do, we don't have ppl/muslims who are fully practicing islam so obviously no great muslims.
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
TLK, Islam does not aim at producing heroes like mother Theresa or mohammad ali (boxer). yes, some of us do want to make heroes which is not the right approach IMHO.
follow proper Islamic system and you will not need heroes. the system will ensure rights of every human being instead.
people like edhi and mother Theresa are good examples but they could hardly make any difference to life of individuals of whole world.
yes, having such people, you can get good reputation.
and, keep in mind, if Allah wanted every human being a perfect Muslim, He could have caused it.
I hope you also remember the hadith where holy prophet(SAW) mentioned Islam will return back to Medina.
that doesn't mean we do not have responsibility of striving for bringing Islam to our lives.
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
Are you suggesting that Muslims are a homogenous entity? Are you?
Ajazali that’s weak.
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
TLK Bro, if you say so can we move this discussion to Philosophy forum?
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
TLK, you need to revise Naseem Hijazi’s novels ![]()
On a serious note, we did produced people who got recognition across the world. If the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is on top of 100 influential personalities as per Michael H Hart, he has also acknowledged Omar Ibn e Khitab in his ranking (though that doesn’t matter much).
We did produced people like Hazrat Hussain (RA), who influenced revolution in later centuries. Salah u din Ayubi is a well known figure and popular than Templars. There were many people related to medical sciences that were produced by Muslim world. Ibn e Sina (Avecinna of west) is one example.
As far as today’s scenario is concerned, I do agree with X2, its all about PR and media that people like Edhi get less footage than Mother Theresa.
BTW how come Mr Jinnah can’t be of same caliber than Gandhi?
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
Muslims did produce leaders in innovation, science and technology. At the zenith of Islam some people started to propagate ideas to Muslims to leave the worldly life and focus more on the soul, starting from Imam Ghazali. As soon as the Muslims stepped aside their downfall started. The attacks of Mongols on the muslim world resulting in the destruction of Baghdad (the seat of learning of the Islamic world) also had a role. Like X2 mentioned even now we have heroes but the media would not take them to the same level of Nelson Mandela or Mother Theresa.
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
Because we do not follow Islam as we should be following .. get a few muslims to sit and interpret Islam and many if not all , will have their own explanation which wont match the other. Mostly conversations will be starting with “Allah is not saying this , what he is saying is this …”
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
@Ali Syed. Didn’t know Mongols attacked Iraq. Off topic. Maybe someone can address that in History section?

Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
yes they did, right after that mangols were found using explosive devices ![]()
True story BTW.
Iraqi chemists were pretty advance at that time.
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
Mongols have a long association with Muslim world, go figure the word “Moghuls”… ![]()
Re: If Islam is such a great religion, why did we fail to produce great muslims
This is with all the religions. Christianity is most affected by this sectarianism. There are references about this in Quran as well. But different in interpretation of scripture doesn’t mean that Islamic world remained barren to produce great people and well known names.
