Ideas for relaxed mehndi at home

Hello folks,
I am in a bit of a dilemma. I have the option of going all out for my mehndi, booking a hall and organising caterers and inviting lots of people but just the thought of the actual wedding is really scaring me! I don’t want to increase my stress any further!

I’d love to have an informal relaxed mehndi at home, with close family friends. It’s not the done thing in our circle, but I think I’d enjoy it more than sitting on a stage in a hall with loads of random people.

Does anyone have any planning/decorating/general organising ideas they could please share? Any pictures? Has anyone had their mehndi at home? How did you decorate your room/organise the food/seat people? Do you think I would need to hire a stage? I’d love to hear if anyone has done the same/or is planning to, or whether the general trend is for a big event.

Thanks in advance

Re: Ideas for relaxed mehndi at home

well it depends on your space at home, like do u have a big garden or a room that can accomodate a certain number of people? this was a while ago but my khala’s mayoon was at home, and my granny had a huge ass garden so it was fine.

my cousin in the uk also had a few dholki parties before the actual Mehndi which was in the hall, and they have a decen sized garden too, so they got a small marquee which could hold a good 50 sumthing of us.

as for decorations here are some ideas that might help.

marquee decorations.

at home…

 good luck!

Re: Ideas for relaxed mehndi at home

My friend had a mehndi at home. They cleared the living room space of furniture, made a stage out of I dunno what, and hired a decorator. Their house looked gorgeous. Basically, they just had some singing w/the dhol & then dinner. It was crazy packed, & food was served in the backyard. My mom told me lots of ppl do their mehndis at home. It's certainly do-able!

Re: Ideas for relaxed mehndi at home

I'm in a similar position of 'Do It Yyourself' stage- any idea girls? I'm lost too!

Re: Ideas for relaxed mehndi at home

Well my living room isn't huge but not tiny either. I was thinking of hiring maybe a backdrop and decorating with balloons and yellow roses, candles, etc- it's just where to put people. Not sure how the serving food bit would work- there could be a buffet I suppose, but people might expect a sit down meal lol.

Re: Ideas for relaxed mehndi at home

You should look up some pics you really like and try to replicate the basic idea yourself using sari's, dupatta's, and organza/satin fabric. You don't need a love seat, you can just use an bench or ottoman and cover it with fabric. If you can, rent a wooden jhula. Throw around some colourful cushions and pillows, and it will look great! Don't worry too much about everything matching, cause a mehndi is supposed to be colourful. We used colourful dupatta's to create the stage for my cousin's dholki which we did at home.

Just google up pics or find them on this forum and work with you have to get the look at home. I wanted a more intimate setting for my engagement, so we did it at home. I used a dusty rose coloured shimmery organza fabric and draped it over the fireplace with some xmas lights behind it. I hung some white silk flower garlands over the organza and I put some vases filled with flowers and floating candles on the mantle. It looked SOOO romantic!

I wish I could upload pics for you guys!

Also, pinkheels, if you create a setting on the floor no one will expect a sit down dinner! Organize the food in your dining room, so it's a large space for ppl to work their way around the table and lots of ppl can be in there with access to food as long as no one sits at the table to eat. And don't forget to decorate the dining table! You can rent table skirts, put a colourful centerpiece, and decorate the edges of the table with silk flowers or something.

My friend had her mehndi at home and I have to say I enjoyed it much more than the typical mehndis at halls....just so much more relaxed and nice. What she did was clear out the living room, she put the couches in 1 bedroom (which was also where the food was), and everything went in another bedroom..her bed (a single with a foldout underneath) was the stage... lots of scarves and tealights up in the room and normal cushions with beautiful cushion covers from pak. very lovely.

Re: Ideas for relaxed mehndi at home

i had my mehndi at home as well and people said they had more fun as they do in going to a hall for a proper mehndi........for the back drop we took some yellow and green dupatta's (darker colour than my suit i didn't want to blend in to the background in pics) and arranged them on the wall also decorated the entire house with flowers and other decoration piecies just look up some designs for the backdrop you like and you can copy those at home

Re: Ideas for relaxed mehndi at home

I remember back in the 80s and up until the late 90s mehndis were done at home. People would put a stage in their backyard or build a nice porch and everything was done out there and inside the house. it was fun, relaxing and didn't cost very much. If you think about it you could possibly put that saved money towards your home, furniture for it or spend it on your honeymoon. why not?

Re: Ideas for relaxed mehndi at home

I think its a great idea to have mehndi at home if you can accommodate people u want there then why not? Dont go overboard with decor cos some of its designed for halls etc, keep it cosy..but with the right amount of decoration,

Re: Ideas for relaxed mehndi at home

I've been to a few @ home;some in the living room, some in the basement and some in the backyard
The living room/basement ones are set up with dupattas, etc - one had a jhula as the stage... others just decorate chairs/couches

One of the mehendi's in the backyard set up a tent and served dinner indoors
