Ideas for a well-planned open house

I am hoping to do an open house around eid time and hoping to get some ideas here. I need ideas about how to serve the hors d’oeuvres/appetizers and not serve any main course.

I need ideas about:

  1. what should be the menu?
  2. how to serve/set up?
  3. drinks? (I may make fragrant kashmiri tea, and fresh juices) no soft drink like coke wagerah

To understand my situation:

Most of the ppl will be desi indians who are very well travelled and somewhat foodies, few of our french and north american friends will also be there.

If I end up doing the open house I will be inviting about 50-60 ppl, I don’t have any chafing dishes :frowning: and not planning to buy any, will be using my pint size oven to reheat food, thats why I am hoping for some cold and some hot dishes.

I hosted one open house will my SIL last year for bari eid and for the most part it was good, she had about 300 ppl coming and oven stopped working, it was a nightmare :frowning: it was in freaking cold that day (midwest north america) chafing dishes were the saving grace.

erm .. 50-60 people is a huge number .. so definitely you will have to do buffet style … keep lesser dishes so that you dont have to run around like a headless chicken …

One of the dishes I would definitely recommend you keep on the meny is Fatayer .. its an arabic pizza kind of thing .. check on the internet you will get an idea .. really easy to make and has so much variation of taste .. a plate can hold 3-4 different types of fatayer :hmmm:

Also you can do Mixed Grill Seekhs … get boneless chicken and lamb bite size pieces .. spice marinate them each .. next day pop them in the oven individually .. when done … keep them aside .. boil a few potatoes … mix some herbs and spices in them .. make small balls and fry them… now take wooden skewers and add pieces of chicken , lamb, potato , roasted vegies .. and you hve a perfect starter …

very good suggestions, my MIL's cook is awesome, so I can ask her to make seekh and some other kind of kebobs.

Any more ideas ladies??

Re: Ideas for a well-planned open house

tiny spring rolls...cocktail vol au vents/samosas...humous with different types of breads...crudites with dips...potato wedges...pakoras...

Re: Ideas for a well-planned open house

Try to keep your appetizers cold

Pasta salad and/or potato salad - you can serve this cold so it wont require reheating

Shrimp cocktail - again a cold dish

Mini chicken salad sandwiches - again no reheating involved

CB offered a great great suggestion...when the number is larger...instead of working on the variety of dishes I prefer to keep the menu simple.

Serve it all buffet style and try not to heat everything too early otherwise your food wont taste the same if its been reheated again and again.

Good luck!

For drinks...punch? Or if you go to mexican grocery stores they have an amazing variety of different types of juices.
