Have an engagement party to attend this coming weekend and my mind has been brewing for a new way to get mileage out of some heavy outfits that I’ve already got.
I have a very heavy lehnga (from my wedding) that is a combo of green with gold embroidery. I have worn this lehnga on at least 3 other occasions and any other person would say, “Ab buss bhi karo…becharay ki jaan choro” but I have to say hubby did a great job of picking it cuz it looks absolutely brand spanking new still and I can’t just put it away.
Here’s an idea that I have: I’m thinking of wearing the lehnga as a petticoat under the off-white sari that I wore to a valima recently.
Because the lehnga has ghair it will be considerably puffier than a regular petticoat and because the sari is a chiffon-y fabric it will let the lehnga show through.
I’ll wear the sari blouse and wrap the sari in such a way that the lehnga is somewhat exposed. The pallu of the sari will still be wrapped the conventional way.
Can anyone picture this?
Please point out pit-falls so I can either prepare or just dump the idea…
I have seen someone wear her wedding lehnga with a short blouse and draping the dupatta in a way it looked a saree. It took me an hour to realise it was not a saree because the lace lehnga was showing through the plain net dupatta with borders and looked awesome
that's similar to what I'm thinking proto except that the six yards of fabric from the sari will have to be wrapped more than the 2 1/4 yard dupatta......
I was also thinking that I could get a completely different coloured blouse made specifically for this outfit.......but what colour jamawar/silk should I use?
Do it the way proto suggests, or you can get a nice bodice/blouse stitched attached to the lehenga in such a way that you get a maxi gown out of it that's very in these days. You can wear it with the lehengas actual dupatta or plain chiffon dupatta
Wearing the dupatta that belongs with the lehnga is out of the question. :nono: It’s waaaaaaaaaay too heavy…the border on the ends is as wide as the border on the bottom of the lehnga.
I’ll find out if the seamstress can make a blouse for me on short notice. I want something in an off-white jamawar with full sleeves and a huge boatneck or deep round neck with a tie in the back.
If the whole look doesn’t come together the way I want, I’m gonna resort to a Manish sari that I’ve been wanting to wear…
Personally I don't like the idea. I think its because lehngas are traditionally poofier and would kinda throw off the look of a sari and the sari/lehgna combo doesn't really go together... it looks like a lot of random work. If they matched it would look better.

thanks for the honest opinion.......
I will definitely be doing a trial run so yeah.....maybe it won't look good because of all the extra fabric.
as far as the matching goes.....these days there really is no need for things to "match"....in fact if you look at some of the designer pieces you will find odd colours and patterns all gathered together to make a final "look" that often works.
in this case, as I said, I'll have to try the whole thing on first.
I hear you Muniya...
If I wasn't so tired last night after digging out the lehnga from a buried suitcase I would have tried it on to be sure. Just got lazy I guess.
I'd do a trial run because even though I lovvvvvvvvvvve the idea of a lehnga sari - if its too poofy you'd have to make sure it actually looks more like a sari than a lehnga.
I do love the lehnga though...don't blame you for wanting to wear it again and again!
I don't think I like that very much Muzna because they are two separate beautiful pieces. The kaam on both of them is so intricate and different.. it's hard to imagine them gel together.
Why not use the lehnga to make another dress? Or use the heavy dupatta to make a beautiful shirt.. full of kaam! It'll look sooo pretty.

This is what I meant. I get the whole mismatching thing and it can work with colours but different types of kaam just throw everything off. I love the sari though.. I'd wear that with a different coloured blouse!
showed to hubby and he said it was too heavy for the event......he was right. I would have been overdressed.
ended up wearing a black sari instead.
I'm still going to model this when I have a chance and show you guys.......just for the heck of it and cuz I went to so much trouble to pull the lehnga out.....
