As Akif said, to the best of my understanding the Iddah period in Islam is NOT social isolation, it's instead a ban on remarriage that prevents paternity problems.

If a man's wife dies, and 2 days later he goes and remarried and impregnates a new wife, it will be easy enough to know that the baby is his son and his new wife's son.

On the other hand, if a woman is impregnated by her husband, who dies the next after conception (say, in a natural disaster), and the woman remarries the next day and gives birth 9 months later ... how would one be able to tell who the father is ?(assuming she is in a position where DNA testing is not available, and even with DNA testing there is a statistical probablity of misleading results)
