When you think of video games who is the character that you think is the most iconic or defining of video games in general?

It would probably have to be Mario, just because of how hard Nintendo has ridden that fat little plumber 
.
Other than that, you have Link and Donkey Kong from Nintendo. Sonic from Sega. Master Chief, Cloud Strife, Snake, Sephiroth, Pikachu…too many lol. There are a lot of really well known characters but if I had to pick I would go with Mario (even though I’ve never owned a Nintendo console, except for a Gameboy back in the day)

I don’t think it’s really a debate when the answer is so obvious. Mario followed by Sonic or Pikachu.
As much as I love the FF7 characters, outside of Japan/Far East, they wouldn’t be recognisable to your average person.
When I personally think of game characters, I think of Link, Cloud and JC Denton because they are characters in games I really enjoyed playing and often go back to.

Some facts about Mario:
- He has appeared in over 200 games.
- The first game he appeared in was Donkey Kong.
- Mario games, as a whole, have sold more than 210 million units, making the Mario franchise the best-selling video game franchise of all time.
- Original names for Mario included Jumpman and Mr Video.
- Mario is named after Nintendo of America’s warehouse landlord Mario Segale after he confronted its then-president Minoru Arakawa, demanding back rent.
- Mario was originally a carpenter, but was changed to a plumber in his subsequent appearance in Mario Bros due to his appearance and the game’s underground setting.
- He started off clothed in red overalls and a blue shirt which was later reversed to a red shirt and blue overalls.
