LAHORE: Three Pakistani cricketers Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Danish Kaneria would not be playing the forthcoming world cup after the cricket regulatory authority, International Cricket Council (ICC), refused to clear them, Geo News reported Wednesday.
Pakistan Cricket Board has approached the ICC before constituting a pool of 30 players for the world cup.
The PCB would announce the provisional pool on 15th December.
ICC wants to rescue cricket's reputation by taking these measures. They would have bypassed PCB again if it had come to that. It is quite clear who is dictating the terms now.
Having said that, this world cup will NOT be corruption free.
^ If ICC really wants to 'rescue' cricket then they shouldn't have cleared Kamran Akmal in first place, now throwing Shoaib Malik in the 'barred' mix shows ICC incompetence, shows how good they are at following rules/processing.
From ICC's perspective, the risk of letting these players play outweighs the risk of how they are coming across as an organization.
If I were an ICC board member, I would be equally wary of a country whose players have a 'history' and not under control of its own cricket board. Yes, ICC can do a better job and can risk a handsoff approach, but the time calls for damage control rather than saving reputations of some tainted cricketers.
