A senior official of International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption and security unit has reached Pakistan in connection with the ongoing investigations into allegations of ‘spot-fixing’ against three members of Pakistan team in England. ICC official Hasaan Raza met Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials and also gathered information from Veena Malik, the former girlfriend of Mohammad Asif, one of the tainted players. “Reza interviewed film actress and model Veena,” sources told Daily Times on Wednesday. Veena in a television interview had claimed that she had evidence of links between Asif and an Indian bookmaker and that the Sydney Test between Pakistan and Australia was fixed. She has alleged that Asif had personally told her about this and she had also met the Indian bookmaker.
Sources said Veena in her statements to Hassan disclosed about Lahore and Karachi based bookies relation with Pakistan cricketers and international gambling rackets. “Veena also mentioned names of bookies Haji Naeem from Lahore and Lal Chand from Karachi who have direct links with international gambling rackets in South Africa, UAE and India,” sources added. Sources said now the ICC’s official would interrogate local bookies with the cooperation of local police. “Lahore police have received special instruction about massive cleanup of gambling dens and bookies in the provincial metropolis and also issued directions for formation of special teams which only the officer would include who have their honest track record,” sources said.
