ICC Champions Trophy sheds Hair

Controversial umpire Darrell Hair will not officiate in the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy in India.

A spokesman for the International Cricket Council said the decision was down to safety and security concerns.

But confirming he would continue his career, Hair said: “I umpire matches in good faith and take the decisions I feel necessary on the field.”

An outcry followed his decision to punish Pakistan for ball-tampering at the Test at The Oval in August.

Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq was found not guilty of the charge on Wednesday.

But afterwards, Hair freely answered questions at a news conference arranged after the hearing, and was in largely jovial mood.

The 53-year-old Australian, who was relaxed throughout, said he wished to continue his umpiring career.

He remains on the ICC’s elite umpiring panel, which means he may be asked to officiate in Test matches up until the end of March, at which time his contract is up for renewal.

I don’t wish to enter into any debate about racism, people can make their accusations but of course I deny them

He said he accepted the ICC’s decision not to have him umpire in the Champions Trophy but added: "Of course I wish to keep on being an umpire.

“My umpiring performance or career is on public record and if other people consider I am still good enough to umpire I will continue.”

"My contract with the ICC states I must umpire to the best of my ability and apply the laws of cricket, honestly and fairly.

“I’m out there doing my best.”

Asked about allegations that his actions were motivated by racism, Hair added: “I don’t wish to enter into any debate about racism, people can make their accusations (but) of course I deny them.”

Hair, a veteran of 76 Tests, said he would happily officiate at any level anywhere in the world.

He said: "I don’t have any problems umpiring in any part of the world. I’ve umpired Malta, Italy, lots of places.

“If we can’t take the criticism we shouldn’t be out there. I’ve handled it for 21 years and can still handle it when it’s justified and when it’s not justified.”

Re: Hair to miss ICC Champions Trophy

So Doctrove too… :k:

Re: Hair to miss ICC Champions Trophy

heheh yup! Doctrove too going to miss the Champions Trophy

Billy Doctrove, one of the umpires at the centre of the controversial Oval Test, will not stand in the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy in India. Doctrove’s colleague at The Oval, Darrell Hair, was removed last week, officially for security reasons.
Eight umpires have been named from a 10-man panel for the tournament and an ICC spokesman insisted there was “nothing sinister” in the absence.
“There were only going to be eight umpires,” the spokesman told BBC Sport.
“It doesn’t mean Billy Doctrove is a bad umpire.”
Mike Procter, the match referee in the controversial Test, is one of three men filling that role at the Champions Trophy, as is Ranjan Madugalle, who oversaw the resulting disciplinary hearing.
Doctrove and Hair both came in for criticism from Madugalle for deciding Pakistan should forfeit the Test after they refused to take the field following ball-tampering allegations.
Bermudan Doctrove is only a recent addition to the ICC’s elite panel and the match at The Oval was just his ninth Test.
He emerged from the disciplinary hearing saying only: “I’m still an umpire”.
The International Cricket Council has not made any umpiring appointments beyond the one-day tournament in India, which finishes on 5 November.
Umpires are selected for major tournaments based on a five-point assessment of each international match they stand in.
Areas assessed include percentage of correct decisions, ability to cope with pressure, player management, communication and application of regulations.
ICC Champions Trophy match referees: Mike Procter (SA), Jeff Crowe (NZ), Ranjan Madugalle (SL)
ICC Champions Trophy match umpires: Aleem Dar (Pkn), Asad Rauf (Pkn), Mark Benson (Eng), Billy Bowden (NZ), Steve Bucknor (WI), Daryl Harper (Aus), Rudi Koertzen (SA), Simon Taufel (Aus)
