ICC approves early finish to Tests

The ICC’s Chief Executives’ Committee has approved the recommendation that a Test match be called off on the final afternoon if there is no chance of a result. The new regulation, which will come into effect immediately, allows the game to be called off once a minimum of 75 overs have been completed in the day’s play.

This effectively means that the captains can forego the last hour of play, instead of the 30 minutes the old regulation allowed.
Percy Sonn, the new ICC president, unveiled the second edition of the Strategic Plan at the annual conference at Lord’s. The Plan will run for five years, ending 2010, and will chart the ICC’s priorities and areas of functioning.

“It has been put together following an extensive consultation process between an ICC project team, our members and stakeholders”, Sonn said. “It is the organisation’s roadmap for the next five years - years that should be great for cricket.”

The CEC also adopted the ICC Gender Recognition Policy, enabling cricketers who have undergone gender reassignment surgery to play women’s cricket at international level provided they meet the required criteria. This policy is being followed by other leading sporting organisations.

Re: ICC approves early finish to Tests

Well, yes. Apart from this news, I am more interested in Pakistan’s proposal to seek ICC’s permission for holding six-day Tests in the winter time.

Has the verdict been passed out on the above issue yet?

Re: ICC approves early finish to Tests

I’m still awaiting an answer to that as well because that one makes much more sense and would definitely be much more effective in helping the visiting teams beat Pakistan on its home soil.

Re: ICC approves early finish to Tests

Dhobi jee,
To be honest with you, 5 days of Cricket is too much for these days and 6 days proposed by PCB is simply outrageous. In this day and life, a soccer game takes no more than 2 hrs and we are talking about a 6 day game. I would suggest that if test Cricket needs to be kept alive, we got to take some drastic measures to make it interesting like One day Cricket with some "playing" rules rather than "stalling" done by batsmen esp. for the last day of the game.

On the other hand, pretty much every one can go for one day game and even now 20/20 is getting fame and I don't really see any way we can have 6 days of continuous Cricket let alone 5. As once George Bernard Shaw said, "Baseball has the great advantage over cricket of being sooner ended."

Re: ICC approves early finish to Tests

As for early finish is concerned, it is only half-n-hour early finish because half-hour was alreayd allowed. So I don’t know what type of an impact it is going to make.

Every game is different. We cannot change cricket because baseball and soccer is played differently. To make things interesting, one day cricket has already been made heavily commercial. Besides, Twenty20 is there. And I believe that these arrangements have been made after all the deliberations that any alteration in Test format will actually ruin the concept of the game.

6-day Test in Pakistan in winter does make sense. We are not talking about 6 days in any situation. Instead of playing a 5-day drawn match, I would prefer to give another day to see results.

Re: ICC approves early finish to Tests

I think that sums it all very nicely

Re: ICC approves early finish to Tests

That's true that every game is different and Cricket should retain it's uniqueness. I agree with you 100%.

I would agree that 6-day test in Pakistan is feasible esp. in Winter. On the other hand, why can't we make an early start in tests in Pak.

The morning dew won't allow this & let's not forget the fog we have in winter as well.
