POL prices move up - DAWN.COM

ISLAMABAD: The government on Saturday raised the prices of petroleum products by up to Rs4.71 per litre, citing the rising trend in the international market.

However, following directives of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the government made a partial increase of Rs2.5 per litre in the price of high speed diesel (HSD), which is mostly used in agriculture and transport sectors. The summary sent to the prime minister had proposed an increase of Rs3.57 per litre in the HSD price.

“The government has given a subsidy of Rs1.07 per litre in the price of HSD to facilitate consumers following direction of the prime minister,” a senior government official said. Total subsidy on the HSD price now stood at Rs3.63 per litre, he added.

The government has passed on the full impact of increase in prices of all petroleum products, except HSD, to consumers.

The new price of HSD is Rs112.26 per litre.

The price of petrol has gone up by Rs4.64 per litre, from Rs104.50 to Rs109.14 per litre.

The price of kerosene, which is used as a fuel for stoves in remote areas where liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is not readily available, has seen an increase of Rs4.71 per litre, bringing its price up from Rs101.28 to Rs105.99 per litre.

The price of light diesel oil (LDO), mainly used for industrial purposes, has been increased by Rs2.31 per litre, from Rs96.12 to Rs98.43 per litre. The price of high octane blending component (HOBC), which is mainly used in luxury cars, has been increased by Rs5.89 per litre, from Rs132.44 to Rs138.33 per litre.

Interesting to see the government's definition of subsidy. OGRA proposed the rates of HSD to be increased by 3.57 Rupees, the government has approved 2.5 and claimed that they have provided 1.07 as subsidy.

Oil prices are going up all over the world, with US attack Syria around the corner they are expected to rise further. When Pakistan has linked its local fuel prices with international market, there are only two possibilities i think, rise the prices when they rise in international market, or give subsidy and govt pay the difference. Mian sahab already said "Khazana Khali hay" so don't expect any subsidy. That was the first thing he said when stepping in power : /

Re: Ibteda e ishq hay

subsidi na den.. but don’t try to collect tax on petroleum prices. don’t take 17% tax on increased price. fix it to say Rs 10 per liter.. This will definitely lower the prices, if prices are increasing in international market. shair bane and try to broaden the tax net. but miyan sahib is still understanding the system (tajruba gaya tail bechne) :bummer:

Re: Ibteda e ishq hay

I was calculating the price of Brent Crude oil per liter today and it comes to 76 rupees/liter (considering the current rate of $117/barrel). I am certain the government gets their oil cheaper than this from the Middle East and they are charging the end customers 109 rupees/ltr (finished good). I am certain that they are over charging, leave aside subsidies.

Re: Ibteda e ishq hay

Indirect taxes are easy to collect. Its just like taking taxes on gun point and the easiest way to do is collect through petroleum products.

Re: Ibteda e ishq hay

Petroleum levy was introduced by the previous government and continued by the present. Only cements the fact that this government is the continuation of the previous one.

Re: Ibteda e ishq hay

true, thats what they need to do but then it hurts their own business community as they put it, and the land lords, industrialists. i don’t know how it works as i’m not into economics but i guess it will not be that bad a deal for these industrialists if they widen the tax net and reduce oil/electricity prices, it will get adjusted to some extent, but for the agriculture land owners not so much, they have to face it.
