Croft, Chappell banned by ICC
20 January 2003

THE International Cricket Council (ICC) has objected to the presence of the once fearsome West Indies fast bowler Colin Croft and former Australian captain Ian Chappell on the international pool of television commentators for the upcoming World Cup in South Africa, Australian newspapers reported last Saturday.

Chappell confirmed Saturday night he would not be attending the tournament for the Channel Nine network he has worked for since retiring in 1982. He will host the coverage from the studio in Sydney.

Croft, who has become a forthright commentator and writer on the game over the past decade, told the Sunday Age of Melbourne he was unaware of any directive from ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed.

"I'm extremely surprised," he was quoted as saying. "I have had no contact with Malcolm Speed or the ICC. I focus only on West Indies cricket. I don't comment on international cricket or the ICC."

Croft, 49, has worked with several international broadcasters on a freelance basis. He is now head of sport and physical education facilities at the St Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies and was never going to be at the World Cup as a commentator.

But Chappell acknowledged he was aware of Speed's intervention.

"All I know is that [ICC chief executive Malcolm] Speed was asked if there were any commentators he didn't want at the World Cup, not by Channel Nine, but probably by the host broadcaster," Chappell said. "Apparently, his answer was Colin Croft and myself."

The report suggested Speed's objection to Chappell was based on a newspaper column the former Australian captain wrote criticising him.

When informed about Chappell's comments by The Sunday Age, the ICC declined to make any statement.

Graeme Koos, executive producer of cricket at Channel Nine, said he did not wish to comment on the issue.

Chappell, 59, said the Nine network offered to take the matter further, but he decided to stay at home.

"I was told there were three different options, and one of them was for Nine to fight it, if that was the way I wanted to go about it," Chappell said.

"Obviously, it is a World Cup and I would like to see the World Cup. That is on the one hand, but I'm not as keen on travelling as I used to be."

Asked if he considered the ICC's decision and Speed's demand undemocratic, he said: "I would have thought it was a pretty dangerous precedent to set."

Chappell's criticism of Speed in an Indian newspaper was sparked by the ICC chief's stance during the sponsorship row that broke out before the Champions Trophy tournament in Sri Lanka last September and is still simmering.

Sad indeed.

I have always been a great fan of Mr Chappel's expert commentary.
He will be missed.

That is stupid... I dont think he is banned. Its Speed's personal opinion. He cant ban people who criticize him.Commentators and coumnist have righ to do this.

I guess Speed like Sarfaraz Nawaz and sidhu’s commentary

Both Sarfaraz and Sidhu are class and institution in their own :)

What a bummer. Chappell was on my list for team of favourite commentators.

Ian Chappell’s forthright comments on September 10 last year have led to his removal from the Channel Nine commentary team for the ICC World Cup.

The former Australian captain was apparently dropped from the team for South Africa at ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed’s behest. According to a newspaper, Speed was upset with comments Chappell made about his handling of the contract controversy in the run-up to the Champions Trophy.

‘It was made clear to Nine Network, through the host broadcaster in South Africa that Speed did not want Chappell to be part of the international pool of commentators,’ the newspaper said.

At the height of the Indian cricketers’ rebellion over the ICC Players’ Terms, Speed had said: ‘If a player now finds that through his own actions he has put his commercial interests ahead of his ability to play for his country, he needs to decide what is more important to him — the money or playing for his country.’

In response, Chappell wrote in a column:* ‘Cash or country, eh? No mention of any possible administrational blunder in the whole sordid process, it was straight for the jugular….** It’s appropriate to point out Mr Speed has earned a substantial income and enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle in recent times courtesy of the skill and entertainment value of the players… I haven’t heard any magnanimous offer from Mr Speed involving a salary sacrifice.’***

Chappell said he would not be going to the World Cup and would instead host Nine Network’s coverage from Sydney. ‘All I know is Speed was asked if there were any commentators he didn’t want, not by Channel Nine, but probably by the host broadcaster,’ Chappell said.

2 bad. His expert comments were 2nd 2 none. But his comments must be looked into. Maybe he was rite abt Speed
