I will only return to a democratic Pakistan: Altaf
NEW DELHI: Altaf Hussain, the chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, has vowed to return to Pakistan, but only when it becomes completely democratic.
“When true democracy comes about in the country, I will go back home. In the present circumstances, I cannot risk going back as I fear that the incumbent establishment will kill me,” he said to reporters in New Delhi on Sunday.
Mr Hussain said the security situation in Pakistan was poor at the moment and his party’s activists had told him not to return.
Asked why he feared for his life when his party was a government ally, Mr Hussain said the MQM had been an ally of the 1988 government as well. “The matter of my return lies in the hands of party activists. Whenever they give me a call, I will go back home,” he added.
He praised President General Pervez Musharraf’s proposals for a solution of the Kashmir dispute and said the MQM fully supported them.
In an interview to an Indian newspaper, the MQM chief said he was in India on a peace mission. “It is my deep desire that the people of Pakistan and India meet each other without restriction,” he said.
Mr Hussain said Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto were not true democratic representatives. Ms Bhutto belonged to a feudal family and Mr Sharif was an industrialist and they knew nothing of public problems or how the poor lived, he said. online
