KARACHI: MQM chief Altaf Hussain told an audience at Karachi headquarters Nine-Zero Sunday night that he wanted to resign and give up politics.
I do not keep well now and politics has taken a toll on my health, Hussain said to supporters who cried and pleaded he stay on. “A bad time is soon upon us because all the political parties are uniting and ganging up against us,” he said. Hussain said he would disclose the details of what disasters awaited around the corner when he got better.
MQM Deputy Convenor Farooq Sattar said that the party would also move against opposition parties over the May 12 incidents. When Daily Times contacted MQM media cell in-charge Saif Abbas said the party had yet to issue a statement. staff report
Great news, lets see if this also means that there will be a complete change of senior leadership. If it actually happens it will surely improve MQM's standing in my eyes cause it will be the first significant party where the party head steps down himself.
I think its a cheap shot too, he is trying emotional-blackmailing of supporters, but I sincerely wish that he leaves MQM alone and is tried in all courts for terrorism, corruption and what not.
Agree with Emotional blackmailing card......seems like that they are trying to re-unite the support from less active members of tanzeem......read newspapers, MQM sites tomorrow in which affiliates will come ut saying, Bhai Key Leieeye Jaan bhee Haazir, Bhai Zindabaad, Tanzeem Zindabaad etc etc...
maybe others can take a clue from this and step down as well..
If teh top 3-4 levels of leadership pof every political party seriously resign, along with their relatives then we may be in a better shape, sadly teh country is stuck with life chairpersons, and parties named after people (chay group etc) and parties that ask you to take an oath that their leader is awesome etc.
I want political parties to fight, and I want it to get ugly, I want them to drag skeletons out of each others' closets.
hopefully at that point qaum will see true faces of all of these morons altaf, nawaz, qazi, fazl, BB etc etc.
I personally think its a combo of emotional blackmail, and some fear in his heart due to coirt proceeding in UK. he may even be pressured by senior members within his party. who knows, but the sooner he is out of the picture..one way or the other..the better
PS: I doubt his health problems are due to politics, the haram ki kamai and teh massive weight gain probably have something to do with it
Pir jee, its a hydra headed monster. as long as we dont fix the system, some other person will be declared Chairperson for life. Only a matter of time. So I am not sure just removing the leadership will solve matters…
flamey, whata re you suggesting then, we ban all political parties and everyone who is in politics now.
I did have a solution but some people think its a little bit on the extreme side..
basically it was taking all politicians and their immediate families, and pets, gas em, pput them in their houses, level that, concrete it over or pur acid there so no grass grows, and mine teh entire area around their former hosue so if some futrure devotee wanst to go pay respects, he leaves his legs there atleast.
I am not proposing a ban. I think the void it would create will only make matters worse. We r in a catch-22 situation here. We need someone who has the mandate and the will to carry out some political reforms. At the same time, no political party is going to shoot itself in the foot by carrying out such reforms. The political parties need to be made more democratic. There should be a ban on the maximum no. of times a person can be chairperson of a party. Musharraf had the chance. Sadly his report card in political reform areas isn’t all that great. Devolution plan was a great idea but the implementation was such that most Nazims nowadays r toadies of the establishment.
so basically we kinda have to work with the ganday anday and try to make teh best of what we have to work with?
This would also require not just limits on their terms as chair but their terms in office at all levels PM, MNA, MPA, Senator whatever
I would like to suggest that no one other than a PhD degree holder be ever allowed more than once to be elected for a MPA or MNA, lets see how many corrupt elements can come back to occupy the seats and repeat their haram-khori.
do honorary degrees count, because if they do nawaz will get an honorary degree every day from punjab uni, benazir from jamshoro and what nots, and musharraf from harvard :D

I am waiting for Zakk to speak up in this thread. He has about a zillion ideas of where we r going wrong and how to fix them.
I am not sure setting a max. limit on MNA/MPA seat is a great idea. BB's first govt. prolly failed becuz she had no idea how o govern a country. So experienced lawmakers r an essential part of any successful govt. A better idea would be to make the system more accountable..small things will do wonders..for instance, allow Live coverage of Parliament. Let the people see what their reps r upto. Live coverage of Public Accounts Committee.
