So Im just interested to know when people realized that trying to have a baby on their own wasnt working, how long did it take from your first doctors visit to getting the actual help you needed?
Like how long was the process from your initial appointment where you told the doctor that you are having trouble conceiving, all the tests being done, doctor figuring out what course of action to take, and then actually taking that action?
Re: I want to know the process from not being able to conceive to getting help...
in canada, the doctors (your family doc/gyne) usually wait a year of TTC-ing before they take any action and refer you to a RE. Getting an appointment wouldn't take that long...maybe a month or so. The first cycle at the RE is an unmedicated cycle, where they monitor what is going on and your ovulation days. Then after the cycle if you don't conceive, you would probably have an appt with the RE to discuss the findings. From there, the RE would diagnose the issue, prescribe meds or suggest a procedure.
Usually RE's suggest doing 3-6 rounds of IUI before they move to IVF. Depending the case IVF and/or ICSI is the only option. Sometimes it only takes medication before one conceives.

Pretty much the exact same protocol here in the US as well. OP, there is a whole sticky on this topic, you should go through that. Most of us have posted our individual stories there...
