I want to change my career...

Re: I want to change my career…

Ironically - channel 4 had a show on TV today (uk) ‘the truth about junior doctors’ - I didnt watch it but according to friends its about how we are only allowed to work 48 hours a week legally but actually we work 100 hours a week and how fatigue makes us all depressed etc but atleast I know its not only me which somehow makes me feel better.

I know lots of jobs work 100 hour weeks but I dont think any other jobs deal with human health, life and happiness day in and day out.

Re: I want to change my career…

I think the reason investment banking pays big salaries is coz it’s mind numbing and needs you to give a 110% even if you don’t give a hoot.

Global banking practices are set to get a nice reaming sooner or later given all the mess they have created by indulging in thinly disguised gambling with other ppls money and lying about debt risks universally to push packaged debt on others.

Being a doctor is guaranteed to be a respectable profession for at least the next century. Don’t switch it for something as assbackwardly as I-banking aka glorified suitwearing conman.

Re: I want to change my career…

How expensive a wedding could be? :hmmm:

Dinner for
4 witnesses
4 parents (2 sets)
One Qazi (Optional)
One Mithai Ka Dabba and a glass of sweet milk.
Two simple suits
One simple ring

Allah Allah khair Salla!

I think it may all be little different in Canada and you may end up enjoying your current career. I agree with whoever said take a break. It may be because you are overwhelmed with the wedding and working. Once you are settled then think about all this again. You may have a different answer.
Also, by administrative positions I meant working for hospital administration, medical union admin, that doesn’t require you to be a doctor.

Re: I want to change my career…

I was standing in line at Starbucks and it’s one of the Starbucks frequented by the i-bankers in the city - and oh boy, there really is a “type” of personality amongst the group

Re: I want to change my career…

you’ve got THAT right, for sure!!!

the worst part is that the same attitude is exhibited by the females…it’s so unbecoming!!!

Re: I want to change my career…

As with anything, there are exceptions to the rule and there are some really nice i-bankers out there (I know a few). But because it’s such a cut throat industry - nice guys finish pretty far behind the bad guys.

Re: I want to change my career…

I think it sounds like you’re just burned out, because as you said you’ve been working nonstop for years, with no time to reflect or rewind. A break might be nice.

What you’re feeling is pretty common–I remember in college, I absolutely hated working; when I got better jobs I realized I didn’t hate working itself, I hated the kinds of jobs I had (low skill, too many rules and restrictions, unstable, nasty coworkers etc)

What exactly is it that you don’t like about your work? Sometimes we dislike something but can’t figure out quickly what exactly it is we don’t like; once you isolate that, you can figure out how to go about fixing it…whether that means going bck to that field or switching over to another one.

Re: I want to change my career…

I work in the banking field and hate it. I guess I just hate working and wish I could sit on the couch all day long doing nothing.

On an more serious note, trust me if you think banking/investment is a easy job, then it’s not my dear. With all the experience and time you’ve invested being a doctor, I’d suggest choosing something within the same realm. Making a complete switch now and starting with a clean slate would mean putting another 3-4 years for work before you can get anywhere. (Excluding the time it would require to get an additional degree if you decide to go that route)

Everything else might seem easier than being a doctor right now (It is a understandably demanding ) but any good paying job will intially require close to the same effort you are putting in now. Nothing is easy.

If it’s the job you detest, then go make the switch. But if it’s because of the level of hardwork, boringness…etc, then I would suggest taking a break or maybe choosing something less demanding within the medical field (You could join a hostpital within a university or such…less paying but then it’s less demanding)

Re: I want to change my career…

I really need to sit and think about this properly, I have actually been avoiding thinking about it as if I am resisting solving the problem whatever it may be as if its almost easier to hate it then deal with a hurdle.

Re: I want to change my career…

I don’t think banking is easy, I dont really think any career is easy to be honest. I dont want something easier I just want something that makes me happier…whatever that may be.

But i think yours and everyone elses advice about a break is a good thing to do.

Oh and university hospitals arent any easier… not the UK anyway.

Re: I want to change my career…

Being a medical student is the worst part of medical training. The journey seems very long.
Not that residency training or further fellowship is not, but it gets better with time.

Medical profession like so many other requires passion, patience, perseverance and dedication.

Re: I want to change my career…

I am 99.9% sure that if your SO was living in the same city and you weren’t in a LDR, you would not be having this career crisis.

You just have a few more months to go and then you will be giving it up to move anyway. Then you will find out whether you have the motivation or re-start there or not.

Re: I want to change my career…

I am a resident not a medical student!

Re: I want to change my career…

Very true!!

Re: I want to change my career…

When you come to Toronto Insha’Allah. Take a break and analyze what is it that you would like to do. In Toronto here..there is shortage of medical staff..be it admin or something else. Pay is amazing depends on what kind of position you work on. In anyway, i wish you all the best in your career choice and hopefully InshaAllah..you’ll be fine. As someone said..i also believe..you seem quiet burned out. So look forward to join your husband here and search for whatever you would like to do in your life..

Re: I want to change my career…

OK. First year is the worst then. No one really likes it.

It also depends where the training is and what type. Busy hospitals give better training. Even doing scut work may pay off in future.

Second year is better and so on.

Going through tough training really comes handy in future. The person really becomes tough emotionally and learns how to control sleep wake cycle (taking cat nap) and manage other issues along with. Many doctors answer their pages during night, give orders and go back to sleep and still remember in morning what they said.

Re: I want to change my career…

Usually surgical training is most difficult especially if it is at busy hospital and there is pyramidal system. A lot of residents then leave or “made to leave” the program and they have to find another type of training. Unfortunately their one (or more) years training gets a bit wasted and they cannot apply that training in future.

Re: I want to change my career…

Maybe there is your answer?

Re: I want to change my career…

they are closely related that will save too much hard work inspite of 4 years

here two doctors are successful businessmen.
