Investment banking requires a finance degree, if not an MBA.

Re: I want to change my career…
Quit whining. Why did you waste resource if you did not want to help people.
Beside if you are good eventually you will chose what you want to do, if you keep whining then you do what you do now.
Re: I want to change my career…
In the UK lots of people I know who were docs are now in banking too- I guess its different in canada?
Re: I want to change my career…
I dont get your second sentence - please elaborate
Re: I want to change my career…
ALso i didnt say I didn’t want to help people but actually doing the job is alot more than saving lives and curing - people die. all the time on you, and get cancer and horrible diseases and sometimes when you do help people and save their lives you get a letter telling you what a terrible doctor you are because out of the bazillions of people you saw that day you didnt give this one person enough time.
Some patients are lovely thought ![]()
Re: I want to change my career…
^ “Banking” industry in general is VERY different than investment banking. I don’t know of many people within the IB industry who landed an investment banking job without a business/finance/accounting degree. Again, I stand to be corrected and I could be waaaaaaaaaaay off base.
Heck, I work in “banking” and I don’t have a business/finance/accounting degree - so a general banking career is possible for people from all walks of life.
Re: I want to change my career…
Which school did you go to ? ![]()
Re: I want to change my career…
Ill have to look more into IB and banking etc.
Its so complicated - my family and in-laws and future husband are so proud of me because im a doctor- ooooooooooooh doctor. It makes me resent it more.
I am more than a ‘doctor’
Re: I want to change my career…
If i am good at what i do - did you mean now as a doctor or as in life in general?
I will do what i want - in the medical world or in another career?
If i keep whining ill do what i do now - be a doctor or a whiner?
Re: I want to change my career…
^ What about hospital administration? There are some interesting and lucrative careers in the admin side of the medical profession.
Re: I want to change my career…
if you lasted 5/7 years in school holding bones and sculls, then you are a ‘doctor’ kind.
And I said , if/when you are good in your field eventually you chose what you want to do.
So you poking people soon, rather then reading pill charts.
baqi some time detours help deciding things too. So do some thing else.
Re: I want to change my career…
and the field is not as easy to enter…kinda like law…you don’t just need the degree…you need to show marketable experience to get into a reputable firm…so you’re still gonna be required to do grunt work.
Re: I want to change my career…
I would hope that they can see past your “career choice” and love/respect you for who you are rather than what you chose to do as a means of earning a living.
Don’t fall prey to the stereotypical standards that are out there. Consider them being proud of you for having the dedication and the intelligence that is obviously required to complete a medical degree…not pride for the degree itself.
Re: I want to change my career…
Investment banking is tough to break into from a medical background. They usually take econ/accounting types, and engineers because they can all number crunch. That’s all you’re doing, excel monkey work, and taking sh*t from your boss (most of them are a-holes). But then again, people put up with it because the pay is good. As a doctor, your intelligence isn’t in question, but they will question your motivation and numerical background (it’s surprising how many medical students are scared of physics and math). It might be different in the UK, your best bet would be to network. Start cold emailing former doctors who are in banking and ask them if they’d be willing to speak to you for about 15 minutes (use Linkedin, or better yet, try to find fellow alumni from your school).
Besides the administration side of medicine, you could work for a few years and go into management consulting. They take professionals with all types of backgrounds and I’m sure doctors get hired there. Management consulting is basically strategy, and process consulting across all industries, which is why they hire across all industries. The pay is not as lucrative as investment banking but it’s still very high.
Re: I want to change my career…
as a general comment…
to be truly successful in high-demand/high-yield careers one needs to be passionate about what they are doing…
lacking passion means that you will tire of any career.
better that you take the time out to really explore your “likes and dislikes” as well as what you want out of a career (i.e. why do you work, what motivates you to get out of bed and run, not walk, to your workplace, what gives you a feeling of accomplishment, etc.).
Re: I want to change my career…
have you thought of going in the pharma industry ?
btw like muzna said a break would do you good. Clear your mind, reflect over whats important in your life …
or get pregnant and have a baby ![]()
Re: I want to change my career…
na uh.
get a job, complete the required due time and then get pregnant to go on mat leave.
Re: I want to change my career…
But she already has a job doesnt she?
I know from experience the break did me good and now I love my work, before I was fed up too.
Re: I want to change my career…
Whilst I agree that you should take some time out and really consider what you want to ‘actually’ do, I also believe that people should stop getting their panties in a twist about your choice to change your career.
Do what makes you happy. You haven’t wasted resources because the knowledge you’ve acquired cannot be wasted; it’ll be with you forever and you can help people all the time, whether as a doctor or not.
Re: I want to change my career…
My own parents are just upset that I am not enjoying a profession that I worked so hard for, the future inlaws/husband are super proud of me I don’t want to let them down - but they are nice people so they do see me for than my title.
I think I need to look into things further or maybe just take a break when I go over there to Toronto and start a clean slate - I will have a home, a working husband and some savings. Maybe all I need is a break because it has been non stop for years now.
I will look at what I don’t like about my current job is it the workplace, people or is it the profession or is it just me? Am i finding it hard to balance my LDR, a wedding, work, exams, family etc etc and its just getting on top of me.
I need to do lots of reflecting and I need be more positive I think.
