i am quite intrigued by the life of qalandars.. not many people know who they were… here is wut i know
Rabia Basri Qlanadar
A slave and a very pious person… a woman could never be a qalandar but she did so much of ibaadat dat Allah gave her half of the darja of qalandar. Her rutba can be imagined from here that she promised {mannat mangi thi } when ever she willbe freed she will go for hajj. one day she was freed but she was so far from makkah so she started walking but fell down cuz of the deseret heat. there was some bazurag{i forgot his name } he said that i was at the moment by kabbah shareef and i saw kabah being disappeard infront of my eyes for 5 minutes. it is said that Allah s.w.t placed kabah by Hazarat Rabia Qalandar so she can do the tawaffaf.
hazart bu ali seena or sina qalandar
He did ibaadat for 10 years.. and was asked by Allah in return what you want ? since Hazart Bu was in so much in love with the zaat of hazart Ali R.A so he said to Allah s.w.t .. make like Ali R.A .. Allah said no it cant be done as ALI R.A is only one. hazart Bu went back did ibaadat for another 10 years .. and were asked by Allah s.w.t what you want he repeated the question.. Allah s.w.t said cant be done.. 3rd time hazaart bu went for ibaadat and Allah s.w.t said welll look no matter what you do i cant make you like Ali R.A but i can give you the Khusbu of Ali that used to come from his body. so he was granted the Bu of hazart Ali. R.A.
Hazart Sakhee shabaz qalandar

thank you for sharing. :)
SalmanNY, they were sufis.
I dont know about sakhe shabaz.. but Rabia Basri is well known and also
Avicenna(Ibn Sina).
I think we should discuss in the culture forum, I am sure alot of folks there could give us good insights...
salman I also know only these three. I'm gonna have to ask my father. He knows a little more or so.
bu ali is arabic meaning "father of ali"....
arabs have a tradition of calling people by the name of their eldest son "bu ibrahim" (father of ibrahim), "bu khalid" (father of khalid) and so on....
when some urdu reader read "bu ali" he understood bu as boo (smell) as in urdu....
and made up the story....
most of the stories u read about these ppl r similarly made up....
the kaabah never left its place for Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the highest ranked among all of Allah's creations, even when he was asked to go back to Madina without umrah by the Quresih, so who is Rabia Basri (may Allah bless her) or anyone else to have such honor....
i have heard and read such stupid stories that r hard to believe and take ppl to shirk....
the problem is that it is so much built into our society that even educated ppl dont realize it....
example, Dr. Allama Mohammad Iqbal, known as hakeem-ul-ummat, says about Hazrat Nizaam-ud-deen Awliya (may Allah bless him), also called mehboob-e-ilaahi:
farishtay parrhtay hain jis ko woh hai naam tera
barri janaab teri, faiz aam hai tera
:
:
maseeh o khizr se ooncha maqaam hai tera
if a man of such great knowledge as Iqbal is saying that Nizam-ud-deen ranks higher than prophets i.e khizr and Isa (may Allah bless them), then what common ppl wud say is much worse....
may Allah guide us all and give us the courage to speak out for the Truth and deny the False....

Well Mughaal jee,, its not BU that Arabs use for calling, but its ABU..
and about the rest of your description I dont want to argue on that.
it is BU, and u r talking to a man who was born in arabia and has lived all his life in arabia, so u know i am well informed.... :)
errr both abu and bu are used.
cases in point abu dhabi, abu ghazaleh intelelctual property co, hazrat abu zar ghaffari, abu dujjana, abu huraira and hazrat abu bakr the sahabis, not to forget egyptian places like abu simbel
hey and even extremist groups abu sayyaf and abu nidal ;)

as far as Allama Iqbal is concerned we shouldn't be going on literal meanings of his poetry, His love for Allah and islam was amazing, ppl just know him as shaer-e mashrik, but he was far more than that, i mean just look at one thing that he used to cry while reciting holy Quraan, tell me how many alims u know who do so.
i myself don't believe on some stories ppl tell abt buzurgs and all but God knows how many of them are true and how many of them are just stories. Those soofis did exist and were very close to Allah but then again some stories look just stories to me.
i guess the best option is to stay with Quraan and some authentic books and go with ur heart, Allah will help u. if we start going after molvis for advice then dunno wat will happen.
I wanna add a famous sher on Ali R.A. in regards to the Qalendari...
haideriyum qalandaram mastum
banda-e-murtuza Ali hastum
paishwa-e-tamaam rindaanum
ke shere sowe yuzdanum
