Mr Caudle added: “However, it transpired that the defendant was a possessive person who became obsessed with Amanda’s previous relationship.”
One of Mr Ramdat’s problems was that “he was a detective sergeant and her previous boyfriend had been a very high-ranking officer,” said Mr Caudle.
In May 2007 the high-ranking officer texted Miss Lowe, asking for the return of some belongings and subsequently then sent a number of other texts.
“The defendant thought the man was sending texts in order to cause problems between himself and Amanda,” said Mr Caudle. “This led to a row.”
Another row ensued which resulted in Miss Lowe leaving her home but Mr Ramdat sent Miss Lowe texts apologising for his behaviour and saying he “didn’t want to lose her”.
The relationship resumed but followed a familiar pattern of rows and making up with Ramdat allegedly calling Miss Lowe a “slag”, saying she was “disgusting” and pointing out that “he was the second married man she had been with”.
“He said to her all people wanted to do was sleep with her,” Mr Caudle told the court.
Mr Caudle said there had been another argument in June when Mr Ramdat accused Miss Lowe of ruining his life, both at home and at work.
“He cornered her and placed his hand around her mouth” and “screamed in her face” so his “spittle” was hitting her.
Mr Ramdat apologised and the relationship continued but there were more arguments over the next few days.
“One or other would leave, only to make up and resume living together again,” said Mr Caudle
On July 7 Miss Lowe decided to leave once again.
“The defendant picked her up and pushed her to the bed with his hand over her mouth so she was unable to breathe,” the court heard.
Ramdat then became afraid that Miss Lowe - who was asthmatic - “might have actually stopped breathing,” said Mr Caudle.
He said Miss Lowe described how the incident lasted for “about three hours”.
“He called her a number of names,” said Mr Caudle. "Made a number of threats, said he would hurt her mother and her brother.
“He said he was used to being nasty to people and he knew what to do.”
But the next day Mr Ramdat was calm and apologised, saying he could not believe his actions and he loved her.
Mr Ramdat denies assault by beating and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
