I think it is time to call Sehwag's bluff....

Let us call a spade, a spade folks… Virendar Sehwag is a mediocre batsman at best and I think a glorified and thinly refined version of Afridi.
He doesn’t have any footwork, no technique… any good bowler can get him with some thought… Seeing how Sehwag got out in the last three matches, I have no doubts of Sehwag’s abilities (or the lack of it)…
I think India should try Sanjay Bangar in his place for the opening slot … Bangar will probably spend more time at the crease than Mr. Sehwag and can also take up the much-needed 5th bowler role. Though I know this is not going to happen since India are on a roll at the moment and no one has time to listen to logic or reason as long as India is winning…

Listen what Michael Holding has to say about Sehwag…

Sehwag is overrated: Holding

Faisal Shariff in Johannesburg | March 10, 2003 12:08 IST

Former West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding believes he has been vindicated with the consistent failure of Virender Sehwag in this World Cup.

“This tournament was supposed to be Sehwag’s show. In fact, people were comparing him to Sachin Tendulkar. That, I thought, was a joke,” Holding said.

Holding has been saying for nearly two years now that Sehwag is a mediocre batsman and would be severely tested on bouncy wickets with juice.

“Today you can see for yourself. Sachin is up there and Sehwag is down in the dumps.”

He argued that though Sehwag scored a Test century against England it counted for nothing. “Getting a hundred against England does not count. If you want to show your mettle, score a hundred against Australia, South Africa or Pakistan and not in India but outside the country.”

When reminded that he scored a century on debut against South Africa in South Africa, Holding asked what Sehwag had done after that to merit such praises as he had.

“Sehwag is overrated and he needs to prove himself on the international stage.”

Skipper Sourav Ganguly has defended the Knight of Najfgarh at media conferences, saying that he is a top class batsman and just one innings away from getting back in form.

Since his hundred in New Zealand, Sehwag’s string of scores have been 4,6,4,36,24,23,21,3 causing concern in the Indian camp.

Former South Africa coach Bob Woolmer has said that Sehwag should look to stay at the wicket instead of trying to find the fence from the start.

“He should just spend more time getting in. He is opening the innings. So he has time to spend 6-7 overs and let his natural game start. Look for the singles, look to rotate the strike, give the strike to Tendulkar and don’t look to hit fours. He is looking to hit fours all the time, and he is making mistakes. His feet aren’t moving well early on he should just make sure that he should try and get a good look at the ball,” Woolmer said.

Former Test wicketkeeper and selector Kiran More said that the most disappointing thing about Sehwag’s dismissals is he is getting out trying to play artistic strokes for singles.

“If his strength is to score boundaries then just go out and smash the bowling. It is such a waste to see him get out trying to score singles.”

Ganguly said that as long he gets the big knock in the important games he would be fine.

One of the teams due to pay India next is sure to pay heavily for Sehwag’s bad patch.

In the last 64 ODI games Sehwag has scored eight fifties and five centuries with a staggering strike rate of 98.55.

I think he is a great batsman, he gives exciting starts to his team and the rest carry on the rate. Sure he doesn’t score centuries like Tendulkar but he is one heck of the player.
You can just call him a very talented pinch hitter.

At this moment Sehwag is no where close to Tendulkar, but when you compare these 2 throughout the career, they are very similiar, did you know Sachin Tendulkar averaged 32 in his first 60 matches, very similiar to Sehwag. And he also didn’t score his first cenutry till his 79th ODI but Sehwag has already scored 5 centuries in his 66 match career. Would you have criticized Tendulkar at that moment.

Over rated? first of first Sehwag has never been considered a classy player...everybody knows hes a slogger with awesome power and has got a knack of getting into the position early...
He plays the way people want him to....he cannot be a sheet anchor / stabiliser etc etc..
So saying hes over rated is wrong because hes never rated that high..

Of course some fools try to compare Sehwag with Sachin..the only thing that is similar is the way the play their cuts and pulls...go deeper and you would find that they are as diff as chalk and cheese..

There is no point in comparing Sachin with Sehwag but the start provided by the combi of Sachin and Sehwag is truly amazing . Sehwag does get out quite early but then he scores his runs in a blitzy fashion and relieves other Indian top order batsmen who can then take there time and settle down . Sehwag is a bit like an expendable Sachin and the commentators have a tough time in recognizing who exactly is batting .

You are getting ridiculous day by day. You have a habit of contradicting yourself in one single post. First line you say ‘he is a great batsman’ and you end your para calling him a ‘Pinch Hitter’. :hehe:

Sehwag will never be as good as Sachin, I have watched sachin playing from the day he started playing cricket at Int’l level. Sehwagh doesn’t have 1/10th of sachin’s skills. Sachin scored his century in 79th match because untill his 69th game he was coming to bat at no. 5/6. He was promoted as an opener in his 70th match and from then onwards he is up , up & up

I have been disappointed with Shewag since after the English tour last year. His performances have been very ordinary since then including this world cup. To compare him with Sachin is an insult to that great palyer.

No 'cause the moment sachin stepped to face the trinity of paki bowlers everybody thought that there's somethin divine about this kid an over the years he has proved. Ppl said things abt him, compared him to other bowlers, bowlers sledged him and somehow by the end of the day, he had answers to all thier questions..Sehwag is a good player with no foot movement. He relies heavily on hand-eye co-ordination, which off course won't work all the time.

laterz

Well,
I agree Sehwag is no Sachin.Infect no one is Can be close Sachin. We are talking aboout all time best ODI batsmen. So for gods sake ,stop thi scomparision. But calling hims pinch hitter is stupid.
he is wonderful and exciting batsman.Just because he is having bad days doesnt mean he is bad.Yes he desnt have foot movement but he makes up for him with his eyes and wonderful strokes. He is the most exciting player in India after sachin.he may not have scored many runs in this world cup but the manner in which he scored 20s and 30s had put opposition in defensive.he will be back in runs again.Form is temporary and class is permanent.Just wait.may be next 2 matches. This is thefirst time in his caree when he failed.juts go back 2-3 months and see how he did in NZL,ICC ,SA tour and England.he was brilliant.

Asif Khan ji, please go read my statement as see where did I say he was as good as Sachin. I said

This guy is another Afridi - perhaps only difference being he stays for 2 overs, Afridi stays for 1 over. But at the end of the day, you can't depend on either of these idiots for anything.

true... they should try sanjay bangar... he can bowl and bat...
this guy is an idiot!

Come on, he is a very good batsman, just because he hasn't scored big in this WC doesn't mean he is bad. Before this WC, I think he has been the best batsman for India for the past 18 months, he was the only batsman who did well in New Zealand while others fell flat on thier faces.

He better fire up a big score in the semi's or else!

sehwag is not that bad a batsman as a few round here r making out to be.
one should understand that he is a bit out of touch and may regain his form any moment. he has enough shots to make it to the category of batsmen (not pinch-hitters). he has proved himself many times. his performance in new zealand is there for everyone to see.
his problem is his impatience. once he learns to keep patience, he will silence his critics.

Munna.

The guy has no footwork. Anything bowled high and outside the off-stump, this guy will pop an easy catch in the slips or at point. I think teams have figured him out.

I actually think he is a decent batsmen who is goign through a bad patch. He is still learning, and is in the beginning of his career. I feel the Indians should put their trust in him, His only fault is he just gets carried away. He should spend more time batting himself in and seeing of the new ball.

Or the ball disappears as SIX on 3rd man boundry as he did to Waqar and Nisaanaka.

I think Sehwag is pretty decent batsmen. I think comparing him to Afridi is wrong, because Sehwag stays at the crease much longer than Afridi and plays many more balls than Afridi. Sehwag tries to choose the right balls to hit, but gets carried away sometimes. I think he will learn as time goes on and will become a more consistent opener for India.

Virender (veeru) Sehwag scored a great century against the kiwis...and on the other hand... same thing is with out shahid khan afridi who scored the mind blowing fastest century... then, after 15 matches, afridi was able to score in 40's or prolly 50... and same is with virender sehwag.. our afridi didn't work in the WC and same thing is with sehwag.. and they both open the innings with the world class batsmen....
so they both are same...

Afridi plays 1 over and Sehwag plays 2 overs. Both are idiots who get out shortly thereafter. :rotfl:
