I think (2)...

Unless you actively try to resolve a problem and/or change a situation, you have no right to complain about it.

What do you think?

Re: I think (2)...

I think it's normal....and part of human nature to vent about your frustrations.

However.....I do agree......that it can become annoying to deal with someone who only vents and takes no action to change/improve the situation. After a point.....even the people that you're seeking advice from (friends, family, anonymous people) can find it irksome if one complains all the time....and wants advice....but chooses to do nothing......OR.......doesn't learn from past mistakes and repeats them again and again. And I understand that the person is not obligated to follow the advice....but it is senseless to complain frequently when you could actually implement more concrete ways of reducing your discomfort. Analysis and discussion will help only to an extent ....such as to put things in perspective....but your actions play a bigger role in resolving issues.

I will even admit that I've been on both sides of the equation. I know that I have REALLY ANNOYED family and friends with frequent complaining.....and not much of doing anything to change things. And I've also been the annoyed listener as well. I've also learned that frequent complaining can hurt relationships. That negative energy can eventually take its toll on the listener. A "Negative Nancy" or "Debbie Downer" can be be draining. It can potentially make one unpleasant company to be around.

Re: I think (2)...

I completely agree that one should actively try to find solutions to problems.

BUT often venting is step 1a for solving issues. Often times, strong emotions keep us from seeing the situations objectively enough to look for solutions. In that case, venting helps you relax, so that you can move on to troubleshooting.

BUT if venting becomes a habit, and that too without any attempts at solving problems, well then, that's very annoying.
