I smell roses!

Re: I smell roses!

This was as competitive a game Ive ever seen in college football. Just pure quality.

Congrats to Longhorns and Umair.

Vince Young proved what he wanted to prove, i.e he was worthy of that Heisman.

Re: I smell roses!

Just got back from watching the game and all I can say is WOW. One of the most exciting football (Pro or college) games I've ever seen. Texas' offensive coordinator called a great game. Vince Young played great, but WRs were open all over the field.

Does anyone else see Randall Cunningham when they watch Vince Young?

Vince's knee was down on that early TD. Probably irrelevant--would've been 1st down at ~ the 10, and Texas would've punched it in anyway. It's not like it's the only call that's ever been missed, or like if they had called it correctly that would've changed everything.

I don't see why people say Pete Carroll choked on that 4th and 1 call. I would have went for it too. It was more so confidence in his offense than lack of confidence in his defense I think. They had racked up more than 500 yards on the Texas defense and LenDale White had proven himself many times in short yardage situations. Maybe they should have play actioned and done the lateral screen pass that had worked a couple times in the game though.

If they get the first down, they win the game. I would have taken that chance.

Re: I smell roses!

Hmm…Houston Texans might be re-thinking their #1 pick. Young would be a perfect fit at home.

Re: I smell roses!

I highly doubt Texans will go for Bush since their whole offensive line is a mess, and they already have a very decent quarterback in Carr. I suggest they should trade their #1 pick for 2 or 3 good 1st round picks to strengthen their O line.

What a great game, this is why I will always regard V Young over Bush because of his performance in pressure games. So far he has made 6 big comebacks in the 4th quarters. Its amazing that Texas was 12 points down in the 4th quarter with only 6 minutes on the clock but after that what we wittnessed was one of the greatest performances you will ever see in any sport under crunch situations. Very similiar to the Rose Bowl victory against Michigan last year.

I made a point before the match about the defense of both sides, eventhough Texas defense were not at their best, but they outperformed USC defense in the last 2 plays. Great game overall!

Re: I smell roses!

what happend to reggie bush? i heard so much about him...best rb in college..heisman winner..going to be #1 pick...blah blah but he totally dissappeared...they were using their other rb...if he is such a great rb then shouldnt he get more then 13 carries

anyways vince young is going to be a great qb in nfl...houston should draft vince and trade carr

Re: I smell roses!

The reason why VY is so great is because of the great Texas offensive line, he will not get the same protection if he goes to Houston.

Re: I smell roses!

He’s the best RB in college football from line of scrimmage. You must have not seen him play before. However, in terms of short yardage, White was a better bet.

The only thing I couldn’t ignore from the game is that on 4th and 2, Reggie was on the sideline instead as a wide out. Trojans could have faked and made the play with Dwayne Jarrett.

Re: I smell roses!

First lets look at David Carr’s stats and how decent he has been this season.

He is ranked 21st out of 34 QBs that played this season. His passer rating is 77.2, which is just below average. Yes, I agree that the OL of Texans is extremely poor and even if you put Tom Brady in the pocket, he will get sacked/intercepted as well. But this is just hypthetical. But do you really think that Texans will pass up the oppurtunity to land a Heisman winner like Matt Leinart, a proven talent, or Vince Young, a heisman runner up and huge game in Rose Bowl, over David Carr from Fresno St? I really dont think so.

You remmeber Carson Palmer? Another Tommy Trojan Heisman winner from USC. #1 pick in 2002 draft. It took him 2-3 years to take that mediocre Bengals team to playoffs and a possible candidate for Superbowl winner. In NFL, teams usually build their offense behind the QB and it takes time. Same will happen with Texans. Also, 49ers picked Alex Smith, #1 draft pick. He sucked all year this season, but you can bet all your money that in a couple of years he will be as good as Palmer, when that OL starts protecting him and gives him time to find that open WR.

Whoever passes up drafting Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart or Vince Young (if he goes pro) will be making a mistake that they will regret for decades to come.

Re: I smell roses!

Lendale White is bigger in size compared to Reggie Bush. Bush's success has been his athelicism and speed. He has burned many a seconday and lineman throughout the season. But this Texas team was ready for him. Their defensive line had big mofos and Lendale seemed the best option in short yardage situation to run the ball in the middle and get that 1 yeard. It didnt work. Simple as that. Pete Carrol had tried the same play vs. Notre Dame from his own 25 yard line on 4th down and it worked. And everyone called him a genius. It didnt work this time and they are blaming him. Everyone can be a Monday Morning QB or play caller after the game is over. Remember by this time, Lendale had scored 3 TDs and was having huge success vs. the Texas lineman.

Three plays that hurt USC in the game:
1. Reggie Bush throwing a lateral pass after having rushed 20+ yards in first half and causing a fumble.

  1. Vince Young's knee was down when the threw the lateral pass that resulted in a TD. officials didnt call for a review, Pete Carrol didnt call time out.

  2. On the last drive by Vince Young, a USC defender caused a personal foul on 3rd down, which kept the drive alive and give Texas a first down as well as 15 yard penalty.

But i think above all, USC lost because they had become a lil too cocky. They didnt give enough respect to Texas team. Their arrogance was their demise.
