My question is when discussing/debating an issue, how do you reach consensus on a matter if you don’t even have a common understanding on the terms and issues at hand? Do you try and understand the other person’s perspective at all so that the conversation can be meaningful?

it is really good to know the understanding of your opposite to whom you debating with.

it allows you to make good argument and possibly you could accept other POV.
