*Or do we?
My question is when discussing/debating an issue, how do you reach consensus on a matter if you don’t even have a common understanding on the terms and issues at hand? Do you try and understand the other person’s perspective at all so that the conversation can be meaningful?
Yeah if I have the time and energy left then I'd try to understand the other person's understanding of a term/issue, otherwise I'd just swear at him/her.
“It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it.” ~ some smart dude~
I'm not going to blindly agree with the other side of the argument just to reach a consensus. If everything they say makes sense, I have no issue in accepting I was wrong, I have done so plenty of times on this forum. If I agree with bits of their argument, I will acknowledge that too. If everything they say sounds like nonsense to me, I won't waste my time on understanding where they're getting this twisted thinking from, I'll agree to disagree and move on.

uff.....so harsh!
I wonder how many will never see the sarcasm in your words......

it is really good to know the understanding of your opposite to whom you debating with.
it allows you to make good argument and possibly you could accept other POV.
