I.P address

Hi all,

I am not a Computer geeko.I would lik to clear a doubt here..

Last evening I was having a chitchat with one of my friends here in my native place, who is a leading advocate. He told me that I.P is not static and it would change everytime we logged on to internet. But I was a a little skeptical about that remark and I said I.P is unique to each computer and it would not chage unless the internection is changed. To prove his side ,he called up one of his known persons, who happens to be an I.T engineer and I had conversed with him. What he told me was that the I.P would change each time we log on to net, corroborating my friend’s view.(I know G.S people ban guppies using their I.P’s.If the I.P’s do change then, how the ban is possible? Are there something called Static and Mac IP’s?

Which one is correct?

Re: I.P address

IP can be static or dynamic depending on your ISP. I’m assuming have on a standard ADSL connection, generally in that scenario you would have a dynamic IP signed to your router/modem unless you are paying a little extra to your ISP for a static IP address.

MAC addresses are hard encoded within your network element and don’t change.

Re: I.P address

^O.K Thanks for the reply. But why do we need static IP?

Re: I.P address

There are many advantages, hosting a service is one e.g Mail server, web server, game server etc… which can be easily accessible world wide

Re: I.P address

Is it right to say that most households in the US will have dynamic IPs (those who subsribe to dsl etc)? If you have a dynamic IP, is it hard to be tracked down?

Re: I.P address

Princessjojo, if you have a dynamically assigned IP address, it’s still relatively easy to be tracked down. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP), keeps track of who has/had what IP address at what time.

Re: I.P address

IP address is of two types,Internal IP and an External IP.Internal IP is one that each device like computer, printer has.The external IP is the one through which one gets connected to the internet. The External IP is got from the ISP and is classified into static and dynamic where static IP does not tend to change and the dynamic IP varies each time the modem is switched ON and OFF.If you have a dynamic IP then there are chances every-time you log on to the internet you are assigned a new IP.The duration to the change in IP depends on your ISP.You can check for your current IP through Ip-details.com which displays your public IP when you visit the site.
Static IP will be needed if you run servers, host a website;you will always know where in the world it is and or login remotely.
