I never understood - Why did STN show CNN and BBC?

I think STN/NTM started in 1990 and during it’s test transmission it showed CNN exclusively. Even when it wasn’t showing anything it would show CNN or BBC. My question is WHY? What was in it for STN to broadcast CNN?

And why was the Pakistani govt letting it do that? Pakistan is not a free country, back then it liked to keep a tight control over TV news. Then why would Pakistan allow STN to show a foreign news channel whose reporting might not agree with the Pakistani govt’s “news”?

Re: I never understood - Why did STN show CNN and BBC?

STN was a private channel

STN was not a private channel

Re: I never understood - Why did STN show CNN and BBC?

And how does that affect anything? Pakistani govt didn’t let NTM have it’s own NEWS and NTM had to broadcast the news at 9 just like PTV did.

In Pakistan (atleast back then), govt had a lot of control over televised media.

Re: I never understood - Why did STN show CNN and BBC?

It was Pakistan's first in-house private channel. I don't know how it fell apart or if the gov't took it over when it was going down in the end, but that's how it started. I never followed with the politics that went on with it much though.

It was censored by the gov't. I think that's why GEO and ARY and Indus (not sure about Indus) all are based from outside Pakistan for the most part.

Re: I never understood - Why did STN show CNN and BBC?

PyariCgudia has mentioned the true reason and that's why GEO & ARY are based outstside Pakistan, because of the non-consistent polices, regularities and behavior of the Govt. Policies change with the Govt.

STN was Semi-Govt.'s Channel by providing its technical facilities like equipment while NTM was providing software/programs, just like computers.

Why STN was showing BBC & CNN because they had nothing much to show and they had to fill the screen and they had to pay very minimum to BBC & CNN.

So may be its cost factor or may be its Govt.'s policy............? who knows.........!

Because our “journalist” are Lazy and “behiss” they dn’t bother to research or investigate… even when STN or ptv or “khabrain” or whatever pakistani news agencies are reporting they are only translating from “english” to urdu.. there source is always either BBC , CNN or anyother american/british (or other european) media

Re: I never understood - Why did STN show CNN and BBC?

who cares it was or it was not.. ? being private does not mean that u are under any obligation or something to promote other’s culture or u name it…

:expressionless:

Re: I never understood - Why did STN show CNN and BBC?

STN (Shalimar Television Network) primarliy gave airtime to NTM (Network Television Marketing) for urdu language programming. STN showed CNN mostly for the times when their airtime was not leased to any other company.

Being ap rivate channel they can promote whatever it is that they feel like promoting since they are paying for the airtime.

GEO and ARY both are I think based out of U.A.E.

I would agree with that. People in that part of the world are really depressed and depression breeds laziness.
