How to quit?
How to motivate someone to quit?
Any serious health risks if you quit abruptely or in a short span of time?
Whats the best way of quitting?
And how to stop yourself from starting again once u have quitted?
Motivation is the underlying factor in helping you quit. One needs to identify why they want to quit. The reasons one smokes are also important as these reasons are often barriers for people that want to quit.
in december 1996 i decided i was going to quit, a new years resolution kinda. I started cutting down in early 1997, my pals used to give me hell that there was no way I was going to quit.
I realized I smoked a little when I was out with pals, but also alone when i was relaxing, stressed taking abreak etc.. so I stopped buying cigarettes, this way if i did not have one around me, I would not smoke.
i told my pals not to give me smokes, unless I really pleaded. this way I cut down my smoking significantly, took sugarfree chewing gum as an alternative...no pathces nothing.
In march of that year, i was smoking with the same guys and they said dude, you are not going to be able to quit, 3 months and you are still smoking..(even though it was down to 1 smoke a day or 2 from almost half a pack just a few months back.
I told them okay guys, this is my last cigarette..they laughed, I said okay forget cigarette, this is my last puff, they laughed even more. I said screw it..I am tossing this cigarette and you will not see me smoke anymore. That was it. I did not have a single cigarette for several years.
I smoke now and then, but it amounts to maybe one cigarette every few months with pals. It was just will power. The other guys who were smoking, both of them gave up smoking within a few years.
The best way to quit is to quit cold turkey...Just stop it point blank...No wishy washy stuff...In my case it was my mother's promise which I made to her...
Also, if it's a guy you want to have quit, just tell him that according to a research done in China a couple of months back, men have a 60% chance of becoming impotent if they smoke 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day...I bet that ought to work...:D
Laj, if you quit cold turkey, you've got about a month of bizarre and irritated behaviour before your body starts with the chemicals that i was previously getting from the ciggys. So the people around you are gonna have about a month of pms-like behavior. Cutting down, like Frauds did and then giving it up is a better method, I think.
You can try quitting with Nicorette (the gum), the Patch (which you put behind your ear and magically it stops your urge to smoke AND no it's not the same as the birth control Patch!), or simply go "cold turkey," Turkey.
When I was trying to get my hubby to quit I got him to use nicorette gum and he said that it really worked and he didnt have any cravings at all. Unfortunately, he didnt quit after all because he didnt want to.
So if you want to quit it shouldnt be too difficult as long as you do it cos you want to.
Where theres a will theres a way.
if the person is heavily addicted which means that he craves for a smoke - the best way is to cut down on it. once you are used to smoking 20-30 stix a day - you quit cold turkey - you get damn restless and its very difficult to adjust to that regime...Also, there are chances of re-starting it and believe me it gets worse this time..
for casual smokers its more a case of will power and I guess its more a case of since-theres-nothing-else-to-do-lets-smoke....
