I am really bad with search engines but still I ussually come up with good researched material for my papers. Anyhow I have a paper due for my race and ethnicities course on friday. My prompt is to define American society using one of the metaphors like melting pot, salad bowl, mosaic, fabric etc. I can come up with my own but I dont really care.
The thing is I cant find any articles. I’ve tried different search engines and I cant seem to find stuff supporting the idea of america as a salad bowl. I cant even find anything in the ethnic studies or social sciences journals!
So, if somebody can find me like two good articles, preferably from a journal, that would be awesome!
I had read an article by Jim Blair that might be of help.
The idea of a salad bowl is similar to what sociologists would call "cultural pluralism"... so you might want to search for that.
The other metaphor symbolozing a merger of identities would be something like a cauldron of porridge...
I guess your essay will have to cover some aspects of the history of immigration in the U.S. starting with the Bristish Isles settlers, blacks from Africa, the Irish, Scandanavians, Europe, Spanish, and more recently Asia.
Umar- I actually know what the metaphor salad bowl stands for. The paper is actually supposed to be my opinion but I am also supposed to get other sources that agree with me. I know ther has to be a lot of articles out there written by social scientists but I cant find any. I would have just gone by my text but my instructor sad it in class that text is a shard source, so u can use it but u need other sources as well. :-/
