I need HELPPPPPPPP

What is the meaning of the following hadeeth? Please explain.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “It is better for a leader to make a mistake in forgiving than to make a mistake in punishing.”

Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1011

I'm no scholar, but it looks roughly as "Better to let a guilty man go free than ever punish an innocent man".

i dont know what it means, in my opinion it's better that Allah punishes a wrong doer coz He is just..

Theres a story on a fornicator, a lady came to a sahaba and admitted her mistake,, i dont remember the whole story,,
the sahaba tried to send her away coz she was pregnant, she came back after the baby was born, she was sent back again, hoping she doesnt come again, the sahaba told her to raise her child..
after that she came back again... The sahaba couldnt do anything coz he heard her admit it three times, so i think she was punished...

Dont know if that helps..

^
that wasnt to a sahaba, but according to the hadith, the story goes like this....

a man came to the Prophet (saw) and confessed about his sin....
he said he had sinned with this woman....
so the man was stoned.....
then the woman was called, and she confessed too but she was pregnanat already, so the Prophet (saw) told her to come back for her punishment after the delivery....
she came back after that, but he told her to come after the 2 year period of feeding the baby....
and she did that too, and was finally punished according to the 'had'....

some sahaba were heard saying bad about the woman, and the Prophet (saw) said that she repented with such sincerity that if her repentance was distributed among all people of Madina, they wud all be forgiven....

Its a hadith. The lady admitted her sin. The woman came to talk to Holy Prophet(peace be upon him). As she was pregnant he(SAW) asked her to come back after her baby is born. Than he (SAW) again asked her to go back and breast feed her baby for 2 years.
after that she came back she was punished.

We can just imagine what the punishments are going to be in our next world. i hope Allah(SWT) forgives us all.

Ameen.
take care

Can someone help me find a hadith on a kind of similar topic? It's where a man kept admitted to have done a deed of immorality and was punished, but, as I recall the hadith, Rasulullah (SAWS) said something along the lines of, it would be better if the man had kept quiet and sought forgiveness from Allah, rather than admit it and be punished.

I read that the meaning of this was that once immorality becomes publically known, it has to be punished so that it never becomes viewed as acceptable, that immorality if it occurs it should be hidden with shame.

One name of Allah is "Sattar ul Uyoob"

which means having the highest quality to hide the wrong deeds of people.

i dont exactly recall such a hadith, but i do agree that u have to hide ur bad deeds (except if disclosure is needed for judicial purposes) and pray to Allah to hide them also, but thats only if u really repent and r sincere with 'tawbah'....

Sorry about that, thanks for the correction peeps :)

Allah's names...
Al-Ghaffar- The forgiving
Al-Ghafur- The forgiver and Hider of faults

I think theres another one too, can't remember..
Allah hides the faults of His servants from the person himself, the angels and on the day of judgement from others as well..

nice discussion though bit diverted from my original query. thanks mad sceintist for somewhat satisfactory explanation. I would appreciate if you further elaborate it.
