I don't whether you can read Urdu or not, but if you can then I would suggest Mustansar Husaain Tarar's novel 'Gypsy' which is based on the theme you are talking about :)

:( You missed something. I think there is a novel by Kamila Shamsi on this topic in English. Will confirm shortly.
