I just looked on craigslist and they have posts for a woman in mannhatten looking to start a south-asian woman's book club...i'm sure there are more out htere..
^
SAJA - South Asian Journalists Association already has a huge branch (in fact i think it started) in NYC. So dont know if the craiglist person checked anywhere
I have posted some of these things before but I will do it again:
There is NAMA (Pakistani Medical People) they are having a dinner on the 6th in NYC. PM me BB if you want the info and I will forward the email to you.
There is PACS - PAkistani American Cultural Society with a mix of inbetween people (that is in between arrogant and paindu :)). They have some Eid Dinner coming up on thanksgiving I believe
Dastak - mostly an NYC lounge/bar meeting thing
SAJA has a huge web site and they have events all the time
hmmm I think there is also OPEN NYC - Organization of Pakistani Enterpreneurs in North America and they have good events
All the colleges have events as well but they are harder to mingle with cause the crowds are all students. Columbia, NYU both have strong MSAs and PSAs
BB what sort of cirlce do you want to mix in? Students? young adults etc. let me know and I will see if I can get some contacts for you. Also the other people here who live in NYC should be able to helo.

You got it! It's about New York not desis! New Yorkers are wayyy different from Chicagoans. People in Chicago are friendly and helpful and don't ask about New Yorkers.......They're just..rude and mean, and dirty! It's an ugly place. I visited it for 3 days and I hated it. I feel for you yaar. I would hate to live in NYC for the rest of my life. Maybe it's not that bad but I don't think anyone who has lived in Chicago even for a year will like it a bit. The people, food, culture, lifestyle - everything is different from here. Well I still think you can find some nice people there but I know it's really hard. I understand your feelings because I'm from Chicago and I know how much you must be hating that place. :D
The problem with desis in NY is that they landed there on PK716 and then just stayed there. Never got out west of Newark, north of White Plains or south of Delaware. It's funny that you will never find anyoine who left NY for another US state and then moved back.
The above explanation leads to my theory that desi Neev Yaarkers are close-minded people. Most of their interaction is with similar desis. Due to an abundance of desi population per sq. mile they hardly make an effort to meet "different kinds of people". Plus the fact that desis spend their vacation in Pakistan doesn't help broaden their social skills.
So, I feel for those who have lived outside of NY and are FORCED to move there for economical or personal reasons.
Re: I have to vent!!!
^I feel like totally agreeing with Funguy here.
Hope things are better for you BahuBegum.:)
Re: I have to vent!!!
NYC is the place to be for fun. I think you live in heart of queens in jackson heights perhaps. YOu will find all paindus there for sure but as sehar and others have said. NY has alot to offer just give it time. Masjid would be one way or going to some chand rat parties that goes on in NYC area are also very nice.
If i find or come across a good party place i will let you know...
Welcome to NYC girl - give it some time and it will rock your world :D - take your hubby to time square at night..... its fun :D - city is always fun no matter what time or day it is..

Re: I have to vent!!!
Oh man... old stuff. I used to be so pissy.
I wonder how is Bahubegum doing now?
Re: I have to vent!!!
^^ what do u mean ‘were’??? ![]()
Wrong. I know one such person. Moved from NY to VA, moved back after a couple of years to NY and has moved to VA again after about 8 yrs or so ![]()
Re: I have to vent!!!
Read it again, I said other than personal or economical reasons. Hers were personal.
Re: I have to vent!!!
BB, I know what you mean about being bored by women talking about babies and clothes and gossips about who is doing what and why and who is not doing that and why not...
Ever since I was little, my parents would make me and my brothers come with them to visit fellow Pakistanis from all over Pakistan. Most of them were boring. While sitting with the females, listening with one ear to their mostly boring chit chat (and answering silly questions like 'do you go to school?' , of course I did, all kids go to school in Dutchyland!) I had my other ear directed towards my Dads and Uncles more interesting conversation on what was happening in the world and issues related to religion or science, etc.
Even an hour sitting through those visits was like a whole lost day.
But it doesn't mean that you feel you're better than them. It just means having different interests. Just like you find them boring, they probably find you boring too.
Perhaps if there aren't interesting Pakistani people around you, you could see if there are interesting non-Pakistani Muslims (I am putting you in a box right now, being a fellow Pakistani I assume you are a Muslim too, sorry if that'snot the case) with whom you are compatible. That way you can still have interesting conversations.
Re: I have to vent!!!
what? nyc has paindus?
i thought they all got deported already? :(
seriously....this is the thing to luvvv about the city...you find all sorts here. yes its true that once in new york you cannot even think of moving to some other state but i wouldnt agree with you funguy that ny'ers are close minded. haughty yes....jittery yes (over dosed on caffeine) but not close minded.
i hung out with the paindooest crowd in my high school.....my brooklyn high school had guys showing up in oonchi shalwars and namaz ki topis and girls who stepped outta their house in headscarves and changed at mcdonalds into tight jeans and skimpy tops lolzz. but it was an experience....made me open to all sorts. knowing people that hold different thoughts and views than you makes life so much more interesting
Re: I have to vent!!!
Yet so true (Except for those who go to study ofcourse).
