Re: I have never been a fan of "smaller" countries taking part in WC or ICCCT - Ponti
I agree with Ponting to some extant. This is what i think should happen.
A Qualifying tournament before worldcup and 2 finalist should play the worldcup
In addition to that I think there should be a "floating test status" for the winner of qualifying tournament. That team should be allowed to play limited number of test (or for limited time) and then team's performance should be re-evaluated.
Re: I have never been a fan of "smaller" countries taking part in WC or ICCCT - Ponti
If I am not wrong currently ICC plan is similar to what you have explained above, as for being "smaller" country (ies) I would say that "Bangladesh" is no more a minnow's. they are what srilanka was in 80's.
There are teams with better prospects (Kenya, Scotland and Ireland) if they are given better chances to play atleast 9 ODI's (set of 3 with different countries) over the span of 1 cricket year.
floating test status will ruin the test rankings and it wont help the current test teams, it should be a graduation from ODI's to Test arena.
Re: I have never been a fan of "smaller" countries taking part in WC or ICCCT - Ponti
I agree 100% with Ponting(& Holding) on this issue.
Imazine India, Pakistan etc being able to play in the Soccer World Cup with Brazil, Italy, France and the rest.
To allow countries like Bermuda, Ireland and expatriate outfits like USA, Namibia etc to play in the WORLD CUP dilutes the grandness of the occasion.
And most improtantly, I don't see any benefit coming out of it.
first you say imagine :D
on the seperate note. pakistan india etc do take part in FIFA WC qualifying matches. its a seperate issue that they dont qualify but look at korea, saudi arabia and few other teams who qualify from these groups. they dont go there and win games. but atleast it gives them some chance to play at the highest level and gain some experience.
Re: I have never been a fan of "smaller" countries taking part in WC or ICCCT - Ponti
Most people I know will tune into the World Cup only from the Super 8 stage. The initial round is only for the record books. Agree with Ponting. Its just a waste of time. I don't mind 1 or 2 best associate teams making it into the World Cup. May be we should have a total of just 10 teams participating in the World Cup rather than 16. Its a disservice to cricket and a disservice to these poor teams.
My view exactly. Cheapens records and stats immensely. Minnow ranks 1 and 2 should maybe play, that means Kenya and probably Ireland, but the rest...waste of time, and bad for the viewing public.

What do you guys then think of Wimbledon? I usu. start following it from 4th round or so (i.e. second week) :D
Re: I have never been a fan of "smaller" countries taking part in WC or ICCCT - Ponti
Yah I usually keep abreast of scores in the first few rounds, but it only gets good when the seeds take on each other. Exceptions are when Sharapova or Henin play, God there hot.
