I have duplicates for all the keys except the one that opens our “safety box” - our little safe full of goodies such as passports, credit cards, plane tickets, tax stuff. It is fireproof and I am not sure I can smash it open anyway. I am traveling in two days so need to get it open. What should I do?

I am assuming that the safe box is in bank, so should go to your bank and talk to them and tell them your ram kahani. They should have an extra key or they will get the lock smith to break the lock. Make sure you go to your bank as soon as it opens so they have enough time to get the lock smith.

The manufacturers are in UK. I called a locksmith - I guess it is a lucrative profession now; they are charging 75 an hour, plus 45 dollars to come to my place to do it. They said, because of the brand, the only thing they can do is "destroy it".
Now I need tips about how to destroy it.

When they say “destroy it”, it means that they will use specialised equipment to force it open and thus destroy the locking mechanism.
I severely doubt that you’d have whatever equipment they’ll be using (be it some specialist tool or simply lots of muscle power.
Could you take the safe to them and save the $45 callout fee, so you just pay the $75?

I went to look for my drill. Oh this is divine justice; I had stolen it. Now after a year and a half I checked for it, and my grill has been stolen. And the drill too.

If this is a garden variety "firebox", then take a stout screwdriver and a hammer. Lay the box so that the lock is facing up. Drive the screwdriver into the crack with the hammer and pry. If the lock does not pop immediately, do this over again on the opposite side of the lock. You will find that the locking mechanism is really quite feeble.
ps, normally I do not help drill thieves, as tool theft is subject to capital punishment for gora males.....

Try using a nail file, hair pin, or ask your land lord if he can help you. He might have a drill and might let you borrow it.
