My experience is to start shopping after u reach midterm (that is 20 th week) but take is slowly, don't rush into it, take ur time to try out the items, ask around others with kids. If you don't know the gender either u wait till the baby is born or buy neutral colours, like brown, white, yellow and my favorite, cream colour.
I am due on Oct 28. My midterm is atleast a month away which means I can relax for a while =)
