I recently applied for a job at SKYPE. I have just received an email from someone who identified herself as a ‘talent sourcer’’ for SKYPE. Her email read:
“I have seen you have applied for our Video Engineer role. It would be great to have a conversation with you to discuss this opportunity. Please let me know your availability for this”.
Should I expect it to be a formal interview? Will she ask me technical questions or just general questions to asses my suitability for the job? What kind of questions should I expect?
Re: I have an interview tomorrow. What questions should I expect?
Yeah, agreed with Jinx, she might ask you a few very general screening questions though .. just to see if you fit the role or not ..
Do you have the Job description? if yes , can you look at what the job criteria is and carefully jot down in bullet points , your work experience around that job criteria .. it will help you compose your answers better ..
Sourcers might not go into too much detail but they do need general information about you to gauge your suitability for the role. Before they put your CV before the line manager.
Re: I have an interview tomorrow. What questions should I expect?
talent sourcers don't usually have much technical knowledge. they are basically looking to weed out people who are grossly unfit for the position. good luck man.
Re: I have an interview tomorrow. What questions should I expect?
Glad to hear that Shadan.. so , what type of questions did the sourcer ask? and how long was the interview for?
Thanks Chicken Biryani :)
She asked me the following questions:
1. Tell me about your experience?
2. What is your experience of programming in C++?
3. When does your PhD finish and when are you available to join us?
4. What are your thoughts on relocation?
5. Have you worked on Python?
6. Would you like to work in development team or testing team or are you flexible on working at either?
7. Have you any questions?
It lasted around 25-30 mins. At the end of the interview, she said that my profile matches their person specification and my experience of working with the h.264 video encoding standard (the same codec that skype uses for its video calls) and C++ are a big plus and that she'd be very happy to pass on my details to their VIDEO TEAM and will get back to me by the end of the week.
She said the only concern I can see is that you are not available until March next year but that she thought it'd be fine. Actually I am a PhD student and have just entered my third (last) year. I know its too early but just wanted to start the job searching process early on to get some experience of the whole recruitment process.

Great work Shadan .. so the questions were mostly regarding your general work skill .. Glad it went well .. all the very best , hope you get the role :)

I am working in the field of Multimedia Communication (Electronic Engineering). Specifically, I am working on low-complexity multiview video coding. Its applications are in 3D multimedia (TV, mobile phones etc) and Free view-point TV (future technology) etc.
Once I finish my PhD, I'l have two options broadly: 1) Research and teaching in academic, 2) Research and /or development/innovation in Industry.
My first priority is Industry e.g. (TV, Mobile, Video over IP etc)

Cool,I am in Multimedia computing and computing science. Surprised you do coding in Electronic eng, sounds similar to mine.
Once you complete phd, you can become a lecturer at university so easily. Your first priority 'll get you more money in the marketing world I think.
