What’s the story about PSA testing? An analysis of publicly available information and advice.
Introduction:
The PSA screening test for prostate cancer is a controversial topic in the media. Although growing research evidence suggests that the PSA test has low sensitivity and specificity, and can lead to over-treatment of patients, some charities and patient support groups are strong advocates of ensuring access to PSA testing. There is currently no national PSA screening programme in the UK, but men can ask their GP to be tested: good practice is argued to involve shared, informed decision-making. PSA screening is a common occurrence in primary care, and testing is on the increase.
This study aims to explore how messages about PSA testing in the media are framed and presented, through a review of material from national newspapers, men’s magazines and prostate cancer charities.
Methods:
News articles relating to PSA screening from 2009-2010 were identified from 5 UK newspapers through the Nexis database, supplemented by review of each newspaper’s website. The websites of 5 charities were also searched, and one men’s health magazine. Pieces were screened for relevance. A coding frame was developed through close reading of a sub-set of the pieces and was adapted as necessary during analysis of the full dataset. NVivo 7 software was used during analysis.
Results and Conclusion:
The findings describe the extent of positive, negative, and balanced messages presented to men and also look at points of view represented and common themes. The findings show that the messages overall tend to be unbalanced across the media. Looking at individual media sources, newspapers tend to give mainly positive messages while charity WebPages give a more balanced view. Two main themes identified across the pieces were ‘the imperative of testing’ and ‘celebrity as a role model’.
