I have not visited this facebook page, but I’m sure that this page is created by a extremist Hindu, like the one who killed Gandhijee.

Muslims have lot of respect for Gandhijee and his vision of India. The number of Muslims across the world who love Gandhijee exceeds than the number of Hindus who hate him or love him.

Other reasons why these attitudes and values are institutionalised in India have to do with recent changes in Indian society. In a series of essays, Vinay Lal (2003) characterised India as a country with a crisis of masculinity. This traces back to the time of Indian independence. At the time, there was a great debate about whether India should be divided into two countries, one Hindu and one Muslim. The decision to form two states – which currently has implications in Kashmir – was opposed by Gandhi who saw it as a needless way of creating additional tension. Despite Gandhi’s reduced political role, he became the archetypal Hindu, advocating peace, tranquillity and a communal attitude that supported dignity and emancipation for the poor, commonly known as ‘scheduled’ tribes and castes.

But there was a separate aspect of Gandhi’s character that some found contemptuous. He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, on the 31st of January, 1948. Godse said that he resented Gandhi’s relentless emasculation of the Hindu people. Not only was Gandhi known for his peaceful nature, but also for his commitment to vegetarianism, his celibacy, his rejection of violence and his suspicion of science and rationalism. According to Lal, this attitude became pervasive in India and coloured the conflict between Hindus and Muslims over Kashmir. Hindus developed a perception that they were less manly; they were peaceful vegetarians, in contrast to meat-eating Muslim warriors. Homosexuality and male castration, a more prominent features of Hindu society as compared to Muslim society, perpetuated this view (ibid p.178).

Hindus became self-conscious and began to tacitly fight to counter this view that they secretly had about themselves, and that they thought outsiders held as well. This manifested itself in a tough stance towards aggression in Kashmir, and also in a renewed emphasis on science and rational thought. It culminated in the successful series of nuclear tests in May 1998. Each successful test was celebrated by Indians joyously as they passed around gifts and danced through the streets. According to Lal, this was the second assassination of Gandhi. This interpretation of the Indian context is particularly interesting in light of the findings of this research.

The attitudes that are being perpetuated by higher IT education in India – the deep reverence for science and technology, the focus on one’s own personal development rather than the development of the poor, and the overt desire to build India into a world power – clearly run counter to Gandhian philosophy. This erosion of Gandhian thought has culminated in the election of a Hindu Nationalist government in power, a government that has used religious tensions for electoral gain, and in the process, has magnified cleavages within society (Lal 2003, Tharoor 2000). The government vigorously promotes IT, not only as a tool for Indian development but also as a source of Indian pride. It could be argued that IT is even used as a political tool, since India is clearly more successful at IT than Pakistan, it shows that Hindus are smarter than Muslims (Interview 8).

Thus while Indians consider Gandhi a national hero, the social and cultural trends within the country, the geopolitical situation, and the current state of electoral politics, have all chipped away at the foundations of his philosophy. What is left is nearly the opposite: a reverence for science, distinct individualism, and imperial Indian ambitions. If, as Vinay Lal wrote, the nuclear test of 1998 was Gandhi’s second assassination, then the current sociology of education, particularly higher IT education in India, is Mahatma Gandhi’s third assassination.

Hindu extremists wanted a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu Nation). Gandhijee was against it. Gandhijee called himself a true and staunch Hindu. But he did not support the idea of Hindu Nation, as he considered Muslims of India citizens of India. Thats the reason, Hindus call him a hyprocrite. Extremist Hindus call him Gaddar of Hindu Rashtra

and why is gandhi someone who can't be hated? a lot of his ideology and methods are quite polarizing, and it'd be stupid to assume everyone'd accept them as awesome. he was a man of the masses, quoting scripture to hindus and muslims. but even the top indian leaders at the time of india's independence had huge rifts with his views. Ambedkar, the outspoken chief architect of india's constitution has often labeled gandhi in very unflattering terms as a mere politician and more. gandhi has never been above criticism, and there are a whole lot of people - hindu nationalists, muslim nationalists, communists, modernists, secularists, scientists - who have detested his arguably impractical ways.

If you don't see anything wrong in such groups on facebook, I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem with groups like "Mohammad is a paedophile and I hate him" (nauzubillah). Guess what, I do. I'm sorry, I do have a problem with Facebook (which is supposed to be a decent networking website for the global community) allowing this filth (about any religion/race whatsoever) on there. Live and let live goes both ways and I find it quite difficult to follow this rule when the other person is expressing their hatred in such a manner.

This wasn't about whether we should hate Gandhi or not. Hate him all you want, I have nothing to do with the man. I was just discussing facebook's policy which, in my humble opinion, needs to change. I've seen worse things on other forums/blogs but I couldn't care less about them. Facebook, however, could do better.

facebook is merely a medium. anyone expecting facebook to babysit its users is being unrealistic. at least you get to see who thinks what without them hiding behind the cloak of anonymity. that is good enough for me.

I guess I'm just expecting a little more control from facebook given their position on the internet. Creating such hateful groups is an abuse of the otherwise great facility. But anyway... if you guys think it's alright, so be it. I've already gotten over it. :p

thats not all that true - bathroom writing you usually have no idea who wrote what - on facebook you know exactly which one of your pals thinks gandhi or mohammed are to be hated and such. so bbq can buy a gun and have a blast if she so desires.. there is some accountability..

If they can delete users' profiles name Kate Middleton all over the world, they sure can delete such hate groups.
Beside, I have really grown to dislike facebook now for many reasons...about time crash boom happens and it goes down forever.
