Literally I was done with studies, established a career, relocated to another country, bought a house etc. so the only thing left was to get married and experience that facet of life. It also helped that I found some one I was compatible with otherwise I would be still single as getting married was never a priority, however getting married for the right reasons was always what I was looking for.

Yes but that's a separate category where we still get taxed more. Its not the same as filing "single".

^ Ha…I thought I was getting killed before and then I got married and realized how good I had it before! It all actually depends on the tax bracket you fall under. How much you and your spouse make separately versus what the total is if you combine your salaries together. I know for us…financially we “lost” quite a bit just by checking the “married” box. :hinna:

how? overall you still pay less taxes filing jointly rather than as two single individuals with the same combined income.

That’s interesting, I was under the impression that getting married is generally beneficial in terms of taxes. I’m single now and I get killed by taxes.

Not necessarily. like Paheli said…if you fall into a certain income bracket, then filing separately ends up being financially beneficial.

and then? doing the tax returns of gay couples in states where it’s legal! FUN!!!

i dont see how. your joint filing tax bracket is exactly double of if you file separately. the only time this is of any use to save money, afaik, is if one party has significant itemized deductions far exceeding the standard deductions.

This is exactly why I was so against getting married but at that point I didn’t want kids either. Now I want kids with the man I love and I just couldn’t bring children into an unmarried situation.

Plus I wanted a nice, shiny, big diamond ring (Yeah I’m materialistic… sue me.)

I have a shiny, big diamond…lol…but I got it when I got engaged. Looking back…we should’ve just done the religious ceremony and not registered anything legally. Oh well…hindsight is always 20/20 I guess.

I’m not even officially engaged yet because he hasn’t proposed, because I asked for a stupid proposal and now he won’t let it go. I’ve seen the ring though and he did good LOL.

You know I actually thought about that (get get Nikkah-fied) and not legally married but somewhere in the back of my mind I know that’s not a good idea. I can’t think of a reason why right now but I know if we ever went down that path something would happen and it would come back to bite us in the butt.
