- looking at a dozen or two ppl on a site that has thousands of members, and viewers is not a good sample
- is a website a statistically valid sample anyways
- even if we look at what one may consider exteme posts, and compare them as a ratio to total number of posts on the site, it would be a tiny fraction.
looking at GS I would have arrived at a very different conclusion, i.e. ppl like to chat and have a strange affinity for smiley faces. butthen I am not trying to support my preconceived notions

Dude, I’m 100% gora… specifically about 50% english, 25% italian, 12.5% irish, and (unfortunately) 12.5% french ancestry, most of which emigrated to Boston in the late 19th/early 20th century.
My father’s an ex military officer and I have lived overseas, on both coasts, and in red states and have family all over the country. So shut the F up.
I’m telling you that the average american knows next to nothing about Islam (beyond that it’s followers are often associated w/terrorism I suppose), much less the relationship of Islam to Christianity and Judaism.
If it makes you feel any better, the only thing they know about Hinduism is that they have some bizarre affinity for cows and the chicks have dots on their foreheads.

Also you have to remember that only 8% of Americans own paspports and out of this only 60% travel.

In Afghanistan we had the Idiotic and backwards Taliban and now we have Americas Lapdogs. One set of Misogynists replaced by another set.******In Iraq where are The WMD and where is the so called Democracy. a new geographic literacy study released on Tuesday.
Other exciting facts:
- Fewer than three in 10 think it important to know the locations of countries in the news.
- While the outsourcing of jobs to India has been a major U.S. business story, 47 percent could not find the Indian subcontinent on a map of Asia.
- While Israeli-Palestinian strife has been in the news for the entire lives of the respondents, 75 percent were unable to locate Israel on a map of the Middle East.
- Half of respondents said it was “absolutely necessary” to know how to read a map, but a large percentage lacked basic practical map-reading skills. For example, most young people were able to locate a port city on a fictitious map, but one-third would have gone in the wrong direction in the event of an evacuation.

ASA With regards to rligon being taught in schools in America it is only 99%Christanity that is taught and any other religons are covered in the remaing 1%.
Also geography was stopped as a compulsary subject by Ronald regan in 1996.

Also with regards to Inventions don’t forget that we from the Miiddle East and Asia gave the world more than any culture has ever given. Look at the Astrolobe, Algebra, Biology and many many more.

The stats are not much different from similar stats from a decade or two ago, however the number of inventions and developments taking place in US are still very high. the excellent educational instrastructure, coupled with the ability to attract talent, and some of the top companies based here, you will see developments in areas ranging from software, to surgical techniques, to medicine, or just better ways and means to do what we do today.
yeah there are a lot of dumbasses in USA, but the smart ones more than make up for those who frankly dont need the information that you listed aove to do their daily work.
so yeah to some armchair politicians it may make them feel better about themselves that they can have a chronological list of all activities in teh middle east conflict, but honestly, aside from gas prices, and well now terrorism, how does that impact the daily life of a grocery store clerk in dubuque iowa, or a farmer in americus, kansas.

I agree with you on that. But since this thread is about American’s perception about Muslims. I thought that it was relevant to put National Geographic stats to show how dumb Americans are when it comes to information about other countries.

all these america initiated wars and support for israeli war tend to change peoples perceptions a bit. u know actions speak louder than words, and whereas a few bad apples ruined the muslim image, the whole gov't and majority support by the people ruined the whole country and its peoples' images. By majority, U.S. and americans aren't that popular even outside the muslim world.
