this is what a girl said to me yesterday at a reception we were at.. some indian wedding sonds dvd was playing on the plasma.. and i thought she meant, she didnt understand the movies. She was actuall referring to how she doesnt know the language (hindi/urdu) and was somewhat pleased with herself..
I just wonder.. why do people boast about not knowing urdu/hindi (or watever language background they have)? Is it really something to be proud of? I actually feel sorry for these people.. sorry and angry.
Why arent parents concerned about teaching their kids culture, language, traditions.. why is their primary focus only religion? cant there be a balance b/w west, east and religion?
Is she happy as a person? If so..who cares if she she can understand what her parents language of origin is. You should slap her parents next time you see them for the very reason you mentioned.
true.. its amazing how ppl even try to pretend to not know their native language and feel so proud of it. apparently that makes them more “westernized” and maadran.
yeap suroor... i had another friend whose so cool.. and she's like "i play nothing but curry music in my car".. i wanted to hug her for being so honest and carefree
sadzzz, I wouldn't really find it as something offensive. I know of an individual who prefers not to watch Pakistani dramay because she doesn't understand all the difficult/big words used and also because she feels there's too much rona dhona.
I don't find it offensive or blame her parents for it, as she knows sufficient Urdu to converse with those who may not be able to speak in English, however, prefers to speak in English otherwise as it is her mother tongue.
I'm sure if this individual was at the wedding reception, she would've reacted the same way. However, she's very simple and honest and her intention would've been 'I don't get the lyrics' and not 'Oh I feel I'm all that because I cannot understand'.
Therefore, it isn't always something to get upset over.
I find it more ridiculous when those who can speak and understand perfect Urdu/Punjabi, etc. pretend they don't understand a word of it or show that they are having trouble speaking the language.
Its not really to do with watching drams/movies or listening to desi music. I was getting at the attitude people have towards their culture...
i know people who are simply embarrased they cant speak the language, and they really want to... and others who are embarrassed cus of their association with the culture, and are proud they cant speak their parents mother tongue. There's a difference..
yeah.. i dunno it came about when i was in highschool i think… the word was actually “curry muncher” which seemed quite offensive. It got shortened to curry/curries over the year.. yeah kinda corny.. but thats what us aussies are..
desi people have a bad concept of the fact that if u know how to speak urdu/hindi, u r automatically uneducated and i know a couple like that. not to mention the fact these people also pretend not to know english
I actually agree…culture is what differentiates us from others. And I think its important to have a balance of cultures as well as know ur religion. I agree with u…I think that ppl who live in the west and know their culture have a huge advatage. And should be proud of it!
