I used to be like that until I worked as a temp at the reception desk for a 'big' company. You have to smile at EVERYONE when you are a receptionist. It was the hardest temp job I ever had. Also mind numbingly boring!
I managed to get myself into a tricky situation when I asked the MD what his taxi ref No. was. He said 'Don't you know who I am?' I replied ' No, I am Milly, the TEMP, nice to meet you'. He then introduced himself as the 'MD' to which I replied 'I'm awfully sorry, I have no idea what 'MD' means, may I please have your Taxi ref No.? He just walked away after that. I was smiling the whole time though!

actually most desis cant smile, walk around a mall and most off them walk around looking like they are there as a punishment. I think its somethign cultural.
many desi family portraits that I see are like american gothic or portraits of victorian era ppl, or even some of those old wild west pics that you see.

That is good that desi does not smile at desi. There will be tons of street fights if a desi smiles at other desi Starting with any one of the following opening sentences.
"Abay O-A toh maree biwi/bahan/baitee ko chair raha hay."
"Taree ghar main maan behnain nahee hain kia."
"Abay O-A bhawais hay kia , dosree taraf ko dekh."
"Abay daant bund kar warna bat-tee-see torh kay hath pay rakh doon ga"
So let the desi be desi. They can smile at goray and gorian but not at other desi.

I mean some ppl have a scowl or some strange concentrated look like they are pooping in their pants as they are walking or holding an explosion in until they make it to the loo or something.

I know what you are saying I was just messing around.
Desi think that they do not look good if they smile or they think it is gay to smile or something.
In my beginning days of US I was working at one of the buger joints training store where management trainees were sent for in the store training. I was assigned to train new management trainees. This Arab guy was sent to be retrained because he never smiled at customers and employees in short he was not a peoples person.
He told me he cannot smile without any reason , it is not in his nature. I told him that he is in wrong profession. I had to physically demonstrate to him how to smile and make him practice that ritual of smiling many a times , before he got hang of it.
