Ok so the last 2-3 times I’ve brought fruit from the grocery store, its turned out to have gone quite bad. It looks perfectly fine but when opened it gives off this odor..not exactly rotten but a very strong smell to it.
i am so sick of buying it and then throwing it out
The thing is when I buy the fruit it looks perfectly fine…whats the problem?
I usually open it up the day or day after I buy it. There's no smell when i bu it so i have to go by how it looks....
I did notice one thing though, I buy mostly stuff that is already cut up/peeled like mango, pineapple, melon grapes etc...because those things are in too much quantity for me to eat alone.
Cut up/peeled off stuff is already at the edge of its edible life, that is why they cut it up to remove rotten parts. Unless you are planing to eat it within few hours, do not buy that stuff. Its expensive and least nutritiousness
Never buty pre cut fruit unless you plan to eat it right away.
Best is to buy fresh in little quantity unless you have a large family. Like get 2-3 small apples, a few peaches, a bunch of grapes, a pack of cherries...refrigerate them if they are ready and leave them outside if they are still hard.
^I always buy pre-cut fruits, and even though mine stay for 2-3 days, if yours is giving that odor earlier, then
-Take fruit out of the original box.
-Clean with water.. (You don't want to wash too much if it's a liquidy fruit like melon..etc otherwise it would take away all the nutrients, but for grapes..etc it should work.
-Pick out all rotten pieces. (You may not see them when in box but while washing they always seem to make an appearance esp. with grapes and if one goes rotten, rest follow suit)
-Store them in a air tight container and this should give them 2-3 days extra fridge life.
I've noticed it's always the water of the fruit that catches the odor then the fruit itself (esp with melon). Also if you are buying store generic brand, then may sure you always look at the prepared date if they have any or go for one's that specify that.
yeahhhh i noticed its usually the melon that goes off very fast! Other fruits like strawberries, berries, etc seem to stay good for at least an extra day or two!
In my work world, cut fruit n vegetable is considered potentially hazardous food.. I will never and ever advice buying one!!!
But if you must, at least avoid watermelon, honeydew, and tomatoes just because of their water content and pH that makes them go bad sooner and also harbor more bacteria than others!
Sorry don't have much to offer except just buy in smaller quantities!!
my mum, i don't know why, always gets too much fruit and i'm the only one who eats it and it can go bad quickly, so we make smoothies with what's left, maybe try that if you know you won't be able to eat all of it before it goes bad
Making smoothies is a good idea! Or you could even buy lots of fruit and make a fruit salad and put it in a airtight container in the fridge! That last for a 3 days at least!
