I accepted a job!

Just accepted a position with Columbia University!!! I’m pretty excited.

…some thoughts i wanted to share..
I moved across the country to a city where I was not an alum, I had few contacts and right before the holidays. All big negatives on the job market potential.

  1. Network…I did informational interviews like crazy. One of my job interviews came from a cold email to the VP of the school of medicine. I probably had a 50% response from various networking emails/calls but the ones who met with me were great and extremly helpful. Plus you get better at how you speak about yourself and present certain things. Though i didn’t get the job i accepted from my networking. I met a ton of well placed people at Columbia who would be great mentors and good to stay in contact in the future as I want to grow…
oh both the VP and the CFO the VP introduced me too mentioned how impressed they were that I had the spunk and “go-get-itness” to cold email them and make contacts…it showed initative which they liked… then there were others who ignored my email. You never know what you’ll get!

  2. be willing to do both online job apps AS WELL as network, meet people…

  3. If you can financially, don’t accept the first job offered if that job isn’t right for you or your future professional goals…

  4. Read the books by

deluca, matthew " best answer’s to interview questions…"

john kador’s book on “question’s to ask”

201 Best Questions To Ask On Your Interview: Kador,John: 9780071387736: Amazon.com: Books*

Both gave me great ideas for responses and questions to prepare for as well as intelligent thought provoking questions to ask.

Congrats :flower1:

Well done. :k

wow amelie... congratulations!! way to go! hard work pays off...

Some of my best jobs have been a result of a cold call email, including my last consulting engagement at GE, and also my current appointment at the University.

If you don't mind me asking, What position was this for? What does your job entail?

I will bbe an Adminstrator for a health program. I will be in charge of financials, budget, submitting and following up on grant applications, following our physicians/PIs on programs doing some HR and capital grant/development as well outreach/government/public affairs marketing/lobbying for the program

^ sounds like an amazing job mashaAllah! :)
good luck again!

thats great news.. congrats

How do you do a cold email, writing people in companies asking for a job interview, suggestions ectt..?

When I was going for my interview for my current job a long time ago, I read around 4-5 books, on interviewing, cv, resume, assessment centers, questions and answers for interviews. I agree, one must be fully prepared for interviews and serious job search. I was rejected some, some didnt meet their needs and some didnt appeal to me. In the end, in one month search, I got the job I wanted, it was even better than I wanted. I dont know if today I have the energy to do all that again, when one is in well satisfied a job, laziness gets to one.

Good going and good luck amelie.

Aray yaar...you know me well enough to know I wouldn't do that..

Thanks to all for your congrats.

Congratulations... though its a khaali pheeki mubarak. When will the mithai ka dabba arrive? Also, what do we get... some how I don't think we should expect free health care next time we are in NYC. At a minimum, please arrange for pain killers for all guppies in NYC (and no Aleve, please).

Good luck!

Good for u
