Hypothyroidism in Women!

I got the blood reports today and docs say that my thyroid is underworking…so they have put me on synthroid now…maybe this is the reason of my missed menstrual cycle too!
Anyone had similar problem?how long the treatment was taken, what were the side effects? They have asked me to take it for 3 months straight and then make an appointment in november.
Also as i was trying and hoping to conceive…im also a bit concerned about this thyroid problem having effects on my time and ability to conceive!
Please share your experiences…I need some moral support to deal with this thyroid problem that have emerged out of nowhere!!!:frowning:

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

After googling…i have found that the only symptoms that i have are missed cycles and a couple of pounds weight gain but why hypothyroidism out of the blue moon :teary1:

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

Most likely you'll have to take it for life. thyroxine is very very safe, and as long as you take it, there wont be any problmes.

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

i never had it before....im sure of it as i have had blood tests many times before too....if its not by birth then does it still lasts life long?

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

^Yes, in majority of cases.

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

icono- synthroid, thyroxine, and levothyroxine are the same i assume?

what's your opinion on generic ones

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

it does not automatically lead to infertility.

in some cases, swollen lymph nodes may be a symptom too.

is there a big difference between hashimoto's hypothyroiditis and regular hypothyroidism? apart from the fact that one is an autoimmune disease?

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

Not much difference in terms of therapy and outcomes, its generally pretty benign thing. Yeah all three are same, havent used generics but i think as long as one is using the same generic and while monitoring TSH it shud be okay.

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

My mum suffers from this. She takes Thyroxine. Is this heridatary ? My uncle has this and so has my cousin...

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

Im not sure if it has any link with infertility but its a very treatable problem. If you take your meds you shouldnt have a problem. My dad has had a thyroidectomy and he takes levothyroxine and is doing fine Alhamdulilah!

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

Regular one does not have initial high thyroid hormone production and is more common in older age.

Hashimotos because of inflamation causes high thyroid symptoms and eventually leads to hypothroidism. Regular one may be a form of 'sub-clinical' inflammation.

Anyhow, like icono said, it is treated easily and no real side effects of supplement, like synthroid. The medicine needs to be taken regularly every day.

Yes, hypothyroidism can leat to inability to conceive.

Re: Hypothyroidism in Women!

Usually hypothyrodisme is a chronic condition and needs treatment lifelong. But the treatment is easy, a simple pill, and the sideeffects are minor.
