-Hypnosis-

I have read from time to time that hypnosis is used as a therapy for weight loss and smoking etc. I am just wondering if any of you know any person that went through a treatment? Did it worked? I am asking this coz everytime i open up a newspaper i see big ads and stories where Hypnostic Centers always let readers know how effective they are..but it makes me wonder kay if hypnosis works..then why they are paying million bucks in advertising..word of mouth would have been enough..and ocassional advertising.

Thanks for sharing your opinions in advance

Hypnosis is a state of mind. In my opinion, only if you are letting yourself be, for the lack of a better word, vulnerable to hypnosis will you actually succeed in such treatments. If a person goes into such treatments firmly believing that hypnosis doesn't work, it will not work. It's all psychological.

I have witnessed an old instructer of mine perform hypnosis on his patients. Its a very interesting experience to watch, almost like in a movie.
The patients are selected carefully, types of hypnosis vary as well depending on the presenting problem and it also depends on the person's expertise, whoever is carrying it out. It usually works in roughly more than half the cases.

One may consider hypnosis if other modalities of treatment/ help havent produced the desired results.

I can recommend a few names of reputable people who practice in Karachi and New York.

I've taken a few courses in hypnosis, our professor was a hypnotherapist. It's an extremely interesting topic. He used to peform hypnosis on pregnant women during labor, so they wouldn't feel any pain whatsoever. In fact, they used to sing soft songs while giving birth.

Thanks Sehar, StrayCatsStrut and Fret Wizard for the replies :)

Where did you take these courses, high school, college, etc?

I've also heard that one can induce a state of self-hypnosis and make improvements themselves. I did once or twice my self, its fun, kinda like being toked :) You can also make suggestions to yourself but they are rarely as effective as a pro hypnotherapists. No one can make you fall into a state of hypnosis, you must be willing, contrary to what the movies have you believe, and none can make you do something against your ethics or morals. So its completely safe. Just some stuff from my own research.

I took this course in college. It was very interesting. You're right about the facts you stated. Hypnosis is all about the power of suggestion. There are so many misconception of it. Many people are worried that hypnosis will cause them to do things they won't want to do, or it will get them to reveal their secrets, but it's just not true.

There are also ways of self-hypnosis as well, as you stated, but it's much more difficult than to have someone put you under, since you're then trying to do two things at one time.
