Can anyone help tell me where to buy Hyderabadi jewellery from? I live in the UK and can’t find anywhere that sells these. I’m looking for a choker, 7 layered pearl necklace and tikkah and jhummar and earrings.
If anyone wore these at their wedding, please feel free to share your experiences.
I have all of these, but they were family heirlooms, passed down from my Ammi from her own wedding....the jarau lacha (choker), saatlara & jhoomar.
I'm in the US, and I know that it's almost impossible to find true Hydro jewelry here. I don't know about the UK though...I'd imagine Google would be your best bet. I've seen some websites based out of India that sell artificial sets, some seem high quality
Can you have a jeweler in Pakistan or India make these for you? I live in NYC and haven't found any jewelry store I can buy hyderabadi jewelry from. Your best bet would be to order from Pakistan/India. Hard to find here.
There is a store here in Mississauga that can always source these items for you. I had purchased the choker for my own mehndi years back and then purchases a few other times for my daughter at the time of her Bismillah ceremony. They are called Oriental Costumes.
I'm not sure where to find them in UK.
Thanks for the links girls- I've contacted a few of them and will see if they have available what I'm looking for. If not, I have a friend travelling to India next week and will see if she can find something authentic for me out there.
This is a long shot but does anyone know anywhere in Delhi that stock these kinda of jewellery?
I got my choker and other stuff from Al- Ghousia Jewellers in Pindi. They are on facebook (look up Tradition: bridal and casual jewellery) and deliver internationally. Loved their customer service.
Thank you girls. I'm following all your links and it's been a revelation in terms of price and quality. Just out of interest, how much would you pay for the choker and 7 layered necklace in silver (gold plated)? I've been quoted $1100 from one place with real pearls and £250 from another place with fake pearls. I'm confused. I'm on a tight budget but at the same time want a nice finish.
I've already got a quote for both things being made for me in pure gold and have been told it would be more than £2000 :( Maybe I should get the $1100 one and then have the silver replaced with gold in the future when I can afford it. What do you think?

For heavy jewellery like the choker and necklace, the first estimate sounds right. Gold prices are low these days, but still jewellery ends up costing a lot. Prices of gold will increase in the future. And as far as I know, Hyderabadi jewellery are meant to be heirloom pieces, so if you're planning on handing down your jewellery down to you daughter etc, then go for pure gold. Otherwise nothing wrong with gold plated.
I googled Hydrabadi jewelry online and it is beautiful, very similar to designs I've seen in Pakistan. But what are the distinguishing features of Hyd. jewelry.....is it the use of polki and pearls?

Pearls, polki/kundhan, emeralds and rubies are the hallmarks of Hyderabadi Jewlery. Also the the style...the saatlara haar, which is the 7 graduates layers of pearls with either ruby or emerald drops....the jarau lacha and karan phool which is the thick pearl choker also with either ruby or emerald tear drops, with the earrings that have the pearl saharas that hook up into your hair...it's also the motifs that are used in the jewelry...the flower petal shapes of the karan phool...also used in the chandaan haar, which is another quintessential Hyderabadi necklace....kaali poth ka lacha which is influenced by mangalsutras.
Here are some examples…these pics are from my chauti…I’m wearing the jarau lacha/karan phool & another kundhan haar…both were my Ammi’s bridal sets, that got passed down to me and are traditional Hyderabadi style
(pic quality is a little shoddy because I just took the photos out of the album and used my cell phone lol)
Oh you didn't have to go thru the trouble to post your pics, but I appreciate it. Wow, that's a pretty choker...that style seems to have more an antique/vintage look which I tend to prefer. Pretty pics, MA.

Very vintage! That's why it's a specialized look, and it's not easy to find outside of India and certain jewelers in Pakistan.
