HYDERABAD, Nov 11: Sindh Minister for Local Government, Katchi Abadis and Spatial Development Mohammad Hussain Khan said here on Saturday that Rs35 billion would be spent over three years to improve the basic structure of water supply and sewerage system throughout the province.
He said that in order to ensure the supply of clean drinking water in the rural areas, work was proceeding at a hectic pace on 1,175 water supply schemes and added that in furtherance of this objective 1,108 filtration units were being installed.
He was presiding over a high-level meeting at the office of director-general public health engineering.
He said that officials of the public health engineering department had been deputed to complete these schemes for handing them over to the taluka municipal administration.
He said it was now the responsibility of the TMAs to ensure the completion of the schemes for the benefit of people.
He directed the officials concerned not to compromise on the quality of work under any circumstances and to ensure the completion of all the development schemes within the stipulated period to avoid any increase in costs.He made it clear that no hurdles or mismanagement will be tolerated in this regard.
He informed the meeting that the vacant posts were being speedily filled as the workload was increasing with every passing day.
He regretted that even in this modern age the people have been deprived of basic facilities of water supply and sewerage due to the inefficiency of the previous governments. He said the present government was trying to compensate for the inefficiency of the previous governments.
Earlier, the director-general public health engineering, Mohammad Siddique Jalbani presented a detailed report to the minister about the progress of the development schemes including those which have already been completed.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that it was an irony that due to the inefficiency and indifferent attitude of previous rulers that the historical city of Hyderabad which was the third biggest city of the country has been turned into a third class city.
He said mostly the population of the city comprised of those people who had rendered tremendous sacrifices first for the creation of Pakistan and then for the strengthening of the country.
