Husband/support persons role in labour?

I am not pregnant but i have been on the delivery suite in hospital and it has been great to see how active many husbands or support persons are during labour in supporting and attending to the wife. I attended a childbirth class with a friend whose husband could not make it and they mentioned some great links. This link is from the perspective of the husbamd and talks about how a husband/support person can help during each stage of labour, what the mother is going through at each stage, how she might respond and what the midwife would be doing.

I added in support person just in case the husband is not able to be around or is not that active.

What is too much or too less of a role in labour? How important was it for you to have a husband/support person actively involved in the labour ?

Hopd the links are useful
