You don’t need a tribal council to shame a woman. Rape is such a social weapon, a husband in Govindgarh town of Rajasthan will tell you. He decided to use this “weapon” on his wife so he could get a divorce.
Jangir Singh is cooling his heels in jail after he conceded that he got his brother and nephew to rape his wife so that he could get a divorce, Additional Superintendent of Police Dungarsingh Chudawat said.
Jangir told police he decided to take the step as he suspected his wife’s fidelity and wanted a separation. The 30-year-old victim says she was punished for giving birth to two deaf-mute children.
Unlike the Madhya Pradesh community which forced a woman to undergo ‘‘Agni Pariksha’’ to prove her chastity, or the Pakistani tribe which cheered on while council members raped an 18-year-old to shame her family, Jangir did it all on the sly, recording it on video while his wife was raped.
He later played the video cassette to pressure his wife for divorce.
Chudawat, who is leading investigations into the case, said Jangir, his brother Wazir and nephew Gurinder had been arrested. Two video cassettes had been seized from them.
Four other accused, including the videographer, a nurse who conducted an abortion on the woman and an advocate who helped Jangir with the crime are on the run, he said.
The victim, now living with her mother, has filed for divorce after the incident, the officer said.

Body of TN IPS officer’s ‘mistress’ exhumed

CB-CID officials in charge of the sensational Muthulakshmi murder case have initiated steps for taking the DNA test of the woman, who was found dead in mysterious circumstances near Dindugal last December.
The woman was found dead in her undergarments at Nilakottai on December 11. The death made headlines since she was reportedly a senior IPS officer’s mistress.
CB-CID officials on Monday along with district revenue officials exhumed the body from a cremation ground in Nilakottai for providing DNA sample to the lab in Hyderabad.
Police reportedly conducted the entire operation in secrecy and did not allow the paparazzi to come anywhere near the scene of action.
Muthulakshmi’s sister identified the body, and confirmed that it was her sister, and local police took up investigations.
The case took a curious turn after forensic experts declared that the photo of Muthulakshmi did not match with the skull of the dead person after the superimposition test.
Given the sensitive nature of the case and the alleged link of an IPS officer to the deceased, the case was handed over to the CB-CID.
CB-CID officers had told Sify.com a couple of weeks ago that they were confident of cracking the case very soon and informed that they would be taking the DNA test to establish the identity of the body beyond doubt.
